Worlds of Warcraft collide: Blizzard plans a massive merger of WoW servers
Blizzard plans on combining low-populated WoW servers with active realms to boost engagement.
Blizzard is planning to launch a large-scale global merger of several of its World of Warcraft servers to ensure a healthy and active playerbase.
Blizzard wants all WoW servers to be as well-populated as possible since, quite simply, an active server leads to greater engagement (and the possibility of monetization). The developers are working to eliminate any differences between the realms by combining low-populated servers with those with high levels of populated.
This isn't the first time Blizzard did something like this. Realms has been joined numerous times in the past for this very reason and the move could be prompted by lower than expected subscriber numbers players, or even general monetization. The migrations have often been successful and had a hugely positive effect on play from raids to question and everything in between.
"We've now completed a comprehensive study of realm populations for every realm around the world. Over the next 2-3 months, we'll connect low-population realms to other existing realms. This will take place during scheduled maintenance. Each week we'll connect a handful of realms until we've connected all low-population realms in each region to a significantly larger population ," Blizzard declared in an update.
The mergers also help pave the way for the new WoW Shadowlands expansion launch in 2020.
The crossovers are expected to start in a few months' time and Blizzard assures that it will be an automated process.
