Founded by a former runner, Leeds Bicycle was born out of a personal experience. Leeds Founder Mike Merrell suffered a career-ending injury to his foot that left him unable to run. Despite his disability, he determined to make the most of his new life. He began riding his bicycle to work, discovering a sense of freedom that only a bicycle could give him. Before, he couldn't put his full weight on the pedals without excruciating pain.
Film review
If you enjoy BMX, you'll love this film. This classic BMX movie features stunts, cliches, and one-liners, but there are some awkward moments, as well. The story revolves around three young BMX enthusiasts who stumble upon walkie-talkies that belong to bank robbers. As they chase the robbers, they also have to deal with the kids on BMXs.
As the film moves forward, we follow the hapless man as he searches for the stolen bike. As the film progresses, we learn more about the father-son relationship as the two search for the missing bicycle. While the film isn't a comedy, it does feature some fine moments, and is ultimately touching. It's an interesting time capsule of Italy in the aftermath of World War II. The young actor who plays the father has a difficult decision to make, between being honorable and doing the right thing.
Infrastructure
A new section of cycling infrastructure in the city centre is set to open this summer. The cycle network currently extends over 7km, and a new link with Elland Road Park and Ride station will allow users to extend their journeys by train and across West Yorkshire. The project will also help Leeds meet its target of reducing carbon emissions by 2030. Currently, cyclists face a number of barriers on their journeys, including a lack of safe cycling infrastructure.
In addition to safer cycling infrastructure, the city's new Transforming Cities Fund will provide high-quality cycle lanes and public transport routes to make the region more walkable and cycle-friendly. The new investment programme is expected to improve journeys for 1.5 million people by public transport, take 12 million cars off the road and cut CO2 emissions by 15,000 tonnes by 2036. It's not all bad news though. With the improved cycling infrastructure, Leeds is set for a hugely successful future.
Facilities
A new bike storage facility in the city centre of Leeds is a welcome development for cyclists. The bike store, opposite Superdry on Albion Street, is free to use and has room for 75 bikes. It is ticketed and manned, and cyclists are encouraged to use a bike lock to protect their bikes. It is open from 8am to 7.30pm, Monday to Friday. Learn More ran a unique competition to encourage cyclists to make use of the new bike store.
The new bike storage facilities will be open to the public and will feature competition grade tracks for bike riding. The new facility will also host training and coaching sessions for cyclists of all ages and abilities. The project, funded by British Cycling and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, is estimated to cost PS1.2 million. Leeds City Council has thrown its support behind the project, highlighting the wider benefits of the new park for the local community.
Accessibility
Mike Merrell, Founder of Leeds Bicycles, was once a promising runner, but sustained a foot injury during a training run. Doctors told him he would never be able to run again, but he vowed to make the most of his situation and started commuting to work on his bicycle. It was a strange and liberating experience for Merrell, who couldn't fully put his weight on the pedals without causing severe pain. As an injured runner, he discovered the joy of riding his bike and the freedom it gave him.
Accessibility of Leeds Bike Park. The Leeds Urban Bike Park opened less than a year ago, near the Middleton housing estate. The park features a bike shop and cafe, as well as green, blue, and red trails. The BMX track has a pump track, and a freeride line. The bike park is open to everyone, and there is a designated accessible route for people with disabilities.
Cycle hire
A dockless bike hire scheme will be rolled out in Leeds, North Yorkshire, by the end of this month. Residents will be able to hire one of these bikes via a smartphone app and ride anywhere in the city. This scheme will start in the city centre and then spread to the suburbs and towns nearby. The company is already active in other British cities, including Sheffield and Cambridge, and has provided more than six billion rides. Leeds is the largest city in Western Europe without a mass transport system.
The City Council is seeking to attract investment to introduce a public electric bike hire scheme in Leeds. This will involve a network of 630 e-bikes and 140 docking stations. The first phase will be limited to the city centre and key corridors. The initial delivery will be focused in areas where demand for the service is greatest, and close to the city's existing network of segregated cycle routes. Eventually, the scheme will extend throughout the city and to other areas, such as the airport.
