Ahead of a new school year, which could have students not stepping into a classroom, Microsoft is bringing Minecraft: Education Edition to Chromebooks.

Chrome OS Minecraft: Education Edition will allow cross-platform play with Windows, iPad, and Mac versions. Students will be able to interact and collaborate on projects regardless of the device they use. Microsoft is also updating the game to add 11 new STEM lessons as well as a Minecraft world to teach students about pollination and bees. A new library of lesson plans and tagged learning abilities are part of the update, too.
The company says Chrome OS, iPad and Windows devices will download the update automatically. However, Mac users will need to download it manually. Schools with Minecraft: Education Edition installed in their classrooms will not have to alter their subscription. The company will add the Chrome OS version of Microsoft 365 Education A3 and A5 licenses.
Minecraft: Education Edition has been in beta since 2016 It's a bit of a shock to learn it's only being made available to Chromebooks this year. Google's computing platform is the most popular one for education. As of the year 2019 the company reported that there were 30 million Chromebooks being used by schools across the world. In 2018, Chromebooks represented 60 percent of all laptops and tablets used in classrooms for K-12 students in the US. The other thing that's fascinating about this new release is that it gives Chrome OS users an official way to install Minecraft without sideloading the game onto their device.
