Krebs Identifies Mirai Botnet's Possible Author

The Mirai botnet caused serious trouble last fall beginning with the hijacking of numerous IoT devices to launch a historically massive Distributed Denial-Of-Service (DDoS) attack on KrebsOnSecurity's website in September before taking down a big chunk of the internet within a month. Who's responsible for generating the malware? When his website went dark security researcher Brian Krebs went on a mission to identify its creator and believes that he knows the answer: Several sources and corroborating evidence point to Paras Jha, a Rutgers University student and owner of DDoS security provider Protraf Solutions.

About a week after attacking the security site, the individual who supposedly launched the attack, claiming to be Anna Senpai's name released the source code for the Mirai botnet, which spurred other copycat assaults. It also provided Krebs with the first clue on the long road to discover Anna Senpai's true identity. Krebs created a glossary of terms and names with cross-references, as well as a partial map of relationships.

The full story is admittedly lengthy with over 8000 words, but it's worth the time to understand how botnet wranglers earn a living by deploying zombie devices on innocent targets. The sources that led Krebs to Anna Senpai's identity were involved in the use of botnets on behalf of dark clients, releasing them on security firms that protect lucrative Minecraft servers which host thousands of players. Players will leave the server if their online gaming is affected, for example, due to annoying DDoS attacks or repeated DDoS attacks. This gives servers incentive to switch to security companies who can offer protection and, in this case the same companies that orchestrated the botnet attacks.

Krebs source claims that Krebs' security site was attacked in the botnet war after publishing information in September which led to the arrests of the two hackers behind the Israeli "vDos" attack service. Anna Senpai was believed to have been paid to unleash Mirai on the KrebsOnSecurity site by angry customers who had used the now-defunct vDos and thereby bolstering the security company's interest.
