The History of the World Cup
Between 1934 and 1978, the world cup was held in different parts of the world. Most of the participating nations were from Europe and South America, with a handful of teams from other parts of the world. In general, these teams would be swept out of the competition in the first round, and only a handful would advance to the finals.

Until this year, the United States was the only non-European nation to win the World Cup. However, in recent years, nations like South Korea and the United States have enjoyed significant success. Unlike in previous years, South Korea and Japan hosted the World Cup in 2002, marking the first time the tournament was held outside of Europe or the Americas.

In the tournament, teams compete in eight groups of four. The first two groups are seeded, while the other teams are selected according to a formula based on recent World Cup performances and FIFA World Rankings. Once the teams have reached their finals, the draw takes place and the teams are placed into their respective groups. Since the 1998 World Cup, constraints have been placed on group draws. These constraints include prohibiting the grouping of two European teams, two teams from the same confederation, and two teams from a different continent.

Each team plays three matches in a round-robin format, with the winner of each group moving on to the knockout stage. In its early years, soccer was an amateur sport. The Olympic spirit was not conducive to the professionalization of the game. In the 1920s, the sport began to grow and become a global affair.
