Feeling bored and wondering what to do with this preview, I decided that I wanted to investigate Blizzard's importance in the culture. Outside of The Sims, Blizzard's three PC universes (Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft) are perhaps the most well-known and respected computer game series on the world. I tried to find the one person I know who is most out of touch in computer gaming. Then I called my mom.
(This is a real authentic, real-time conversation.)
"Hey How's it going mums?"
"Eric? You don't even ever. I am so sorry and you didn't call me on my birthday!"
"Yeah. "Yeah.
"Why?"
"Do you know what Warcraft is?"
"Oh that computer thing that has green guys?"
"Yeah. Okay, that's it. Thanks."
I'm not making that up. My mom knows exactly what Warcraft is, even though I think it could be because she watched me play for hours of Warcraft II when I was younger. Blizzard is counting on worldwide brand recognition to sell millions of copies of its new massively online multiplayer role-playing game World of Warcraft, and judging by the game I was able to play at E3, I know that the millions will be very satisfied sleep-deprived customers.
I'm not a participant in the World of Warcraft beta that's taking place at the moment, nor do I personally know anyone who is involved in it. My only reference point for this most sought-after beta tests is the little bit of information and screen shots that beta testers publish on the Internet. When E3 opened its doors to media, I immediately began searching for the Blizzard booth. I introduced myself as an employee of the press and casually mentioned in my remark my disappointment that I wasn't selected for the beta, even though I've put over 200 hours into Warcraft III online, and I was seated in front of a computer to play the World of Warcraft beta.
I remember playing Everquest and Asheron’s Call in the the late Stone Age so I knew what to expect. However, I was not prepared for the beautifully textured, streamlined interface that I was greeted with. Blizzard has the best artists in game development and the low number of polygons of World of Warcraft doesn't stop it from looking stunning and inspired.
I decided to create a Dwarf Warrior, because I love the Mountain King hero in Warcraft III. I named him "OMGDwarf" as often as I could. In just ten seconds, I was on top of a snowy mountain. The character creation was extremely simple and I felt like I had total control over the character OMGDwarf was becoming. Blizzard says that the creation of characters will be a balanced process so that it's very difficult to create a gimped character, such as one that has his/her statistics and feats that are not in line with the goals you're trying to achieve. Wow servers all over If you want an awesome Dwarf Warrior with hands full of magic, you'll be no less powerful than the Dwarf Warrior that spent all his points in giving himself an incredible amount of attack strength.
Directly in front of me, I noticed an unidentified Dwarf sporting an exclamation mark above his head. I figured he had something to say, or perhaps I was exhausted from playing Metal Gear Solid 3 so I ran towards him and he gave a quest to fetch the wolf furs. Within the first five minutes of sitting down to play World of Warcraft, I already had something to do. Anyone who has played an MMORPG is aware that such an event seems absurd to even consider. I would like to congratulate Blizzard on not spending my time.
In a convenient way, there were wolves roaming all over the nearby hills and I walked over and clicked on them and watched them fall over. While this is the standard auto-fighting that every MMORPG has, I was awed by the wild animations and energy that dripped from the polygons that were on my screen. Blizzard has always made their games more unique and personality than they need and you can feel the same unique touch has been applied to World of Warcraft.
The wolf's stabbing went on for about 20 minutes before I decided to be nice and let another player play. It's a bit sad that WoW is stuck in the same rut as an animal that is small enough to level up in the beginning rut that MMORPGs generally have issues getting out of, but thats okay. I am sure that when the final game comes out later this year, it will be so great that even my mom will be enticed to play it.
