Way back in 2020, the developers announced a major change to Minecraft: Java Edition, in which players would soon have to switch from the Mojang account to an Microsoft account in order to keep playing. That's 'soon' in relative terms, as we're not yet at the deadline however, the developers have recently confirmed the date and put out the final announcement for account migration.
As as of March 10, you will no longer be able play Minecraft: Java Edition with the Mojang account. To "improved security, player safety and security" the developers want everyone to switch to Microsoft accounts. lion is the king of the jungle offer free Minecraft caps to encourage players to switch.
You can get all the details on how to migrate your account here. Java Edition will be supported as normal following the change, and will remain a distinct entity from Bedrock. This is a simple unification of the accounts systems. You'll be able to keep your old username but you'll need to have an Xbox gamertag to go with it.
