The Genre of Confession Stories
Confession stories are everywhere. James Frey's faux memoir, A Million Little Pieces, is an excellent example. It claims to be a true story, but the reader has no way of knowing if it is. In fact, 90 percent of confessions are untrue. But the good news is that we have the option of telling our own. Here are some examples of confessions that you may find embarrassing. This might be the time to share your own story.
The genre of confession stories began in 1919 with the publication of True Story, a magazine targeted at working-class women. In the 1930s, its readership reached 2.5 million, and its editor, the renowned magazine publisher, earned up to $10,000 a day. These confession magazines became a form of social learning, and many women re-established their identity by reading the experiences of others. And because the audience for confession stories was mostly female, they tended to have a sexy theme.
As a result of their widespread popularity, confession stories quickly began to appear in the mainstream press. In the 1920s, Macfadden championed genuine reader confessionals and ordered that manuscripts be checked for grammatical errors. Subsequent editors, such as William Jordan Rapp, began exercising more control over the production of these stories. Nevertheless, the publication of True Stories brought with it a slew of criticism.
The genre of confessional writing traces its roots to a wide range of genres, from the diary to poetry. Confessional writing, which is essentially a first-person narrative, is characterized by revelations of deep motivations. The term 'confessional' was first attributed to this genre by M.L. Rosenthal, in 1959. Lowell's life studies contain revelations about his relationship with his parents, marital conflict, and generational trauma. Various confessional writers were associated with the Boston University community and remained in the early 1950s.
While the practice of confession remains largely intact, the emphasis on confession seems to have shifted away from penance. The practice of bringing a laundry list of sins to confession seems outdated. No longer is there much talk about hell. And while the sacrament of confession is important, it is not enough to make people feel better. Rather, the most meaningful confessions are the ones that are spontaneous and voluntary. When people go to confession, they feel more contrite because they have been publicly exposed to the world.
In the Brady case, the confession story is a good example of a successful attempt to resolve an unsolved personal conflict between a suspect and the criminal. Brady, for example, was convicted of robbery, but the confession was his fault. When he confessed to a murderer, he was convinced he was being watched. However, after the confession, he was unable to overcome his feelings and stepped out.
