The battle of Hastings included William The Conqueror and Harold Godwinson. Harold is the King Of England at the moment but William thinks that Edward the Confessor told him that he would be the future King of England. They faces off at Hastings and while William had the numerical advantage, Harold would have the upper ground which woud make it hard for William's men (especially Infantry) to charge up the hill.
Nevertheless, William ordered his cavalry forward and charged at the English army. Harold, meanwhile, arranged his men into a shield wall as he saw that no other formation would withstand the force of the French cavalry. As William's army charged towards the English shield wall, the French infantry banged their shields in the backround but despite this the cavalry was stopped immediately as the Fyrd raised their pikes and pushed the cavalry back. William went full frontal attack and ordered his infantry to charge the English shield wall. The French still weren't able to penetrate the English army so William tried a different tactic.
He did what we call a feigned retreat. Whilst his men pretented that William had been hacked down by enemy infantry, they then feigned a retreat which was effective as half of the inexperienced Fyrf chased the retreating soldiers down the hill. However, William removed his helmet and suddenly gave the order to surround the charging Fyrd. The Fyrd were cut down and the remaining men from the English army made a mild attempt to fight on but soon found themselves retreating back to their camp. Harold was defeated and the new King of England was William the Conqueror.
