The first silent film, Keechaka Vaadham, was made in South India in 1916 and was produced and directed by R. Nataraja, who established the INDIA FILM COMPANY LTD. Then the first talking motion picture was released in 1931, Kalidas which was directed by the H m Reddy.
The oldest studio in the country which is surviving now is AVM studio based in Chennai. T.P. Raja Lakshmi was the first female producer of Tamil cinema. The Ways of Vishnu/Vishnu Leela which was released in 1932, was the last silent film made in India. In early times, dramas were popular among the audiences since then many drama halls had built where they produced short films.
The first sound film, Srinivasa Kalyanam, which was directed by Narayanan in 1934 was the first sound film produced in Madras and since then thirty-six sound films have been produced by the year 1935.
Two actors have been famous who were ruling out the film industry in the 50s and 60s. The Important directors of that time who produced good movies included Krishnan Panju, Sreedhar, P. Madhavan, A.P. Nagarajan, A.C. Trilockchander, K.S. Gopalakrishnan, and C.V. Rajendra. The major actors were M.N. Nambiar, P.S. Veerappa, R.S. Manohar, Major Sundara Rajan, Nagesh, Siva Kumar, Muthuraman, Balaji, Vijay Kumar, and Jai Shankar.
Now talk about the 1980s time, the rise of the superstars Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan who later became the most famous actors throughout the film industry and beat the other cinemas. Among the other important actors are Prasanath, Karthik, Vijay, Murali, Abbas, Dhanush, Vijayakant, Sathyaraj, Prabhu, and Bharat. In the 1990s, actors like Arvind Swamy, Vijay, Ajit, and Prabhu Deva entered the Tamil film industry. The chain is increasing year after year, the new actor and actress came, the new trend has started and so on things happened and are still happening right now.
Tamil cinema with its base in Chennai city of Tamil Nadu has produced the best singers and music producers and directors in the country A.R. Rehman, Harris Jayaraj, Deva, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Ilayaraja, and Srikanth Deva.
