<p>The Missouri landscape is diverse in topography and climate. There are low rolling hills in the north, which are influenced by glaciation. While the Ozark Mountains are mountainous, the area south of the Missouri River is comparatively flat. This is due to the Mississippi River alluvial Plain.</p>

<p>Missouri's population grew more than twice in the early nineteenth century. While most newcomers to Missouri were Americans, a large number arrived in the late 1840s or early 1850s as German and Irish immigrants. German and Irish immigrants were often attracted to Missouri by the prospect of freedom from oppression and famine. Unlike European and African immigrants, however, these individuals did not support slavery.</p>
