Before European Americans arrived, the state's inhabitants were known as the Mound Builders, and they built earthwork monuments such as mounds. This state is home to a large population of Native Americans, but their descendants moved away after European Americans arrived.</p>

<p>While the Missouri general assembly meets once a year, the governor is elected for four years and may only succeed himself once. Missouri voters approved term limits in 1992 for most state offices. The Missouri legislature has two chambers: the senate and the house. Each chamber has its own rules. <p>The Missouri landscape is diverse in topography and climate. There are low rolling hills in the north, which are influenced by glaciation. The land in the south is mountainous, with the highest point, Taum Sauk Mountain, at 1,772 feet above sea level. This mountain is 90 miles from St. Louis. The Ozark Mountains are mountainous but the area south of Missouri River is relatively flat. This is due to the Mississippi River alluvial plain.</p>

<p>Missouri's population grew more than twice in the early nineteenth century. While most newcomers to Missouri were Americans, a large number arrived in the late 1840s or early 1850s as German and Irish immigrants. The prospect of freedom from oppression or famine attracted many Irish and German immigrants to Missouri. These individuals, however, did not support slavery, unlike African and European immigrants.</p>
