An easy approach I've found to let my pals hook up with my Minecraft server, which is operating alone machine is to make use of a free device called ngrok to expose my server to the web.
1) Download ngrok from http://www.ngrok.com. You may need to signup for a free account as well, and comply with their setup directions.
2) Start your Minecraft server
