GlyphosateFarmers use glyphosate to ensure sustainable farming to ensure our food supply over the long-term.
It's not difficult to notice that the world is experiencing an an increase in population. By 2050, the world's population is expected to be 9.7 billion people worldwide--over 2 billion more than today.1 Unfortunately, the amount of land available for agriculture isn't growing with the population. This poses serious problems for farmers charged with producing enough food of high-quality to feed Canadians and the rest of the world.

Canada is the 5th largest exporter.2 Canadian farmers play a vital role in providing food for all. They'll need to be able meet the growing demands.

For the population to grow 70 percent more food is required by 2050. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations' How to Feed the World in 2050*

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Farmers aren't able to meet this growing demand on their own. Fortunately, modern tools and technology such as herbicides like glyphosate can assist farmers manage weeds precisely and efficiently, which results in an environmentally sustainable and secure food supply.

What exactly is glyphosate?

Glyphosate is a potent, non-selective herbicide used by gardeners, land managers farmers, and other people around the world for over 40+ years. It acts by blocking an enzyme which plants--in this case, undesirable weeds, require in order to grow. These enzymes are not present in humans or animals.4 Thus, when used properly, glyphosate is not a danger to either.5

Glyphosate is used in many different ways that go beyond agriculture. Municipalities use it in urban green spaces to shield wildlife and people from toxic weeds.6 Also, it is used on railways to make conductors more visible and to prevent fires.

Recently, there's been a greater focus on the use of glyphosate in our everyday life. Although it's essential to be aware of the ingredients in our food items, it's worth noting that over 160 international health regulatory organizations including Health Canada, agree that the use of glyphosate in a safe manner for humans is possible if properly done.

Helping Canadians to understand the meaning of glyphosate, how it's used, and the critical function it plays in food production and sustainable farming practices could help ease the concerns surrounding the glyphosate that is only one of the instruments farmers employ to make sure that we have safe, affordable and available food available to us.

Glyphosate: What is the reason it's employed in agriculture?

Glyphosate-based herbicides benefit farmers, consumers, and the environment. It is essential to efficient weed management as well as food security and sustainability for the environment. Let's look at each benefit.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Global farmers can lose between 30-40% and 50% of their crops to pests, weeds, and disease. グリホサート It's a huge loss, particularly for farmers, who are able to claim that their crops are the basis of their livelihood.

It is no surprise that farmers rely on their reliable equipment year after année. Applying glyphosate to the fieldsespecially when it comes to glyphosate-tolerant crops -- is a proven way to keep weeds that are destructive from taking over their crops.9 So far the time of writing, no other weed control method has the same degree of efficiency, both in terms of practical and economically.

Crops and Weeds, fighting for their lives

Glyphosate gives plants a chance to fight.

グリホサート Benefits for Canadians and other consumers around the world: abundant, affordable food

The population is growing, and half of the agricultural land is in danger because of the degradation of land and desertification.10 This is causing increased food insecurity. Canadians might pay 55% more for food, if they do not have modern agricultural innovations like the use Glyphosate.

Not only that food items we love eating would be increasingly difficult to get. Science-based agriculture will enable farmers to grow our favorite staple foods for many more years to come.

Glyphosate helps to control the growth of weeds as well as maintain the quality of produce in the supermarket. It also helps farmers take care of what Cherilyn Jolly-Nagle farmer in Mossbank, Saskatchewan calls "their most important asset"--their property.

Foods we love to eat on the table

Tools for crop protection like glyphosate are employed to guard crops from pests and diseases. Farmers can grow.

42% more grain, similar to corn and wheat

72% more fruit

83 percent more potatoes and vegetables

The benefits are evident. Is glyphosate safe to use?

グリホサート Simply put it, yes. As with all pesticides , they should be applied according to the directions on the label. Canada's glyphosate use regulation is managed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. This agency inspects crops for pesticide residue to ensure farmers are using the product correctly. It also has the Pest Management Regulation Agency (PMRA) which offers guidelines, product submission evaluations and rejects or approvals. They have one of the most thorough evaluation processes anywhere in the world.

Regulators make sure that farmers are using approved herbicides in a responsible and responsible method. It is the responsibility of producers and farmers to ensure that there aren't unintended consequences for animals, the environment, and humans.

Thanks to technology advancements and the use precision agriculture, farmers are able to leverage data to be more precise when applying glyphosate in specific regions.

グリホサート It is extremely rare for pesticide residues to be found in food. However, it can nevertheless cause harm if it is. グリホサート CFIA ensures that farmers use herbicides in a safe manner and are following the established limits of residue16. It is extremely rare to detect glyphosate in food products at a low level, which is well beneath the Canadian Government's limit.17 Because it doesn't pose any danger for humans or animals18.

Glyphosate usage as part of sustainable farming practices

Farmers use herbicides like glyphosate to help with integrated pest/weed control system. This means that they use more than just herbicides to manage plants. Glyphosate has allowed them to implement conservation tillage/no-till practices that have long-term benefits to soil, air, and the surroundings as a whole, including:

- Reduction or elimination of plowing/tilling of the land

Reduced CO2 emissions

Capturing carbon soil

Improve soil health

- Reducing the amount of water runoff and limiting erosion13

"No pesticide regulatory authority around the globe currently assesses the glyphosate chemical a cancer risk for humans at the present levels to which they are exposed." - Health Canada, January 11 2019.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

It's more important than ever to ensure that Canadian farmers have access to the technology, tools, support and equipment they require to meet the food supply demands of an ever-growing population.

Farmers will ensure that our food secure and plentiful by following good agricultural as well as pest and food safety practices. Glyphosate, however, is just one of the tools they'll employ to ensure Canadians have access to affordable, nutritious food for the next generation.
