GlyphosateWe need to ensure that we have enough food for generations to come: why farmers choose the use of glyphosate for sustainable farming.
It's not a secret that the world's population is increasing. The world is projected to have 9.7 billion people by 2050.1 However, the agricultural land around the globe isn't expanding at the same pace as ours. This creates significant challenges for farmers that are responsible for providing high-quality food for Canadians, and other people around the world.

Canada is currently fifth in global food exports.2 Canadian farmers will play crucial roles in providing the food we need. Not only will they have to supply more food than they have ever had to, but they will have to manage it all while having to combat pests and diseases that threaten their crops, cope with unpredictable shifts in weatherconditions, and ensure their land is kept healthy and strong for generations of farmers to come.

By 2050, farmers will need to increase their production by 70% to provide food products to meet the needs of the growing population. *Source: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. How to feed the planet by 2050

Farmers can't face this growing demand all on their own. Modern technology and tools, such as herbicides like glyphosate, can be used to help farmers effectively and efficiently manage weeds which results in an increased security and sustainability of food supply.

What exactly is glyphosate?

グリホサート Glyphosate is a versatile herbicide that is non-selective, and is used by farmers, land managers and gardeners around the world for more than 40 years. It does this by triggering an enzyme that plants need to grow, and in this instance unwanted herbicides. The enzymes are not present in animals or humans.4 Glyphosate does not pose any risk to them when it is used in a safe manner.

There are other uses for glyphosate as well. It is also employed in green areas of municipal parks to guard wildlife from toxic weeds.6 Glyphosate can be utilized on railway lines to improve the purpose of reducing fire risk and visibility.

In recent years, glyphosate has been the subject of more scrutiny and is being used in our daily life. It's crucial to consider what's in our food, it's important to note that over 160 international government health regulatory agencies, including Health Canada, agree that glyphosate is not harmful to humans when employed correctly.8

In helping Canadians learn about glyphosate, how it's used, and the critical function it plays in food production as well as sustainable agricultural practices could help ease the concerns surrounding the glyphosate that is only one of the many methods farmers employ to ensure we all have safe, affordable and available food items to eat.

グリホサート Glyphosate: Why it is employed in agriculture?

Glyphosate-based herbicides can benefit farmers, consumers, and the environment. It is vital to effective herbicide management as well as food security and sustainability for the environment. Let's examine the advantages of each in more detail.

グリホサート According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, global farmers could lose between 30-40% and 50 percent of their crops to weeds, pests, and disease. This is a huge cost for farmers, especially when they view their crops to be their source of income.

It's not unexpected that farmers have been relying on their tools each year. グリホサート Applying glyphosate to the fields- especially with glyphosate tolerant crops is an effective method to prevent destructive weeds from taking over crops.9 So far there is no other weed-control method can match the level of efficiency, both in terms of practical and economically.

Weeds against crops The struggle of their lives

Glyphosate offers crops the chance to beat up to 30,000 weed species in exchange for light, space and nutrients, as well as water.

Benefits for Canadians and all consumers around the world Benefits to Canadians and consumers worldwide: plentiful, affordable food

The population is on the rise, and 50% of our agricultural land is likely to be unusable in forty years. グリホサート This could lead to food security issues. Canadians could pay up to 55% more for food if they don't implement modern farming methods including the use of Glyphosate.11

It would also make it more difficult for us to locate the food we enjoy. Thanks to plant science However, farmers will be able to sustainably grow more of our favourite staple foods for years to be.

Glyphosate is a great way to manage the spread of weeds. It also helps keep food costs down at the store. It also aids farmers in taking care of the land that Cherilyn Jolly-Nagle is a farmer from Mossbank, Saskatchewan calls "their most important asset"--their property.

Keep foods we love on our table

Farmers can flourish when crop protection tools like glyphosate are used to protect their crops from diseases and insects.

42% more grain such as corn and wheat

72% more fruit

83% More vegetables and potatoes12

The advantages are clear. But is glyphosate safe for use?

Simply simply put, yes. Like all pesticides should be used in accordance with the instructions on the label. In Canada the use of glyphosate is regulated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) which checks crops for residues of pesticides to ensure that farmers are using it in a safe manner as well as the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) that provides the guidelines for regulation for product submission evaluations, as well as approvals (or rejections)--and is one of the largest evaluation processes throughout the world.14

Although the regulatory agencies are responsible for ensuring farmers use approved herbicides safely Farmers and manufacturers also play an important role in ensuring that glyphosate is been used correctly and safely to ensure that there is no unintentional harm to animals, the environment, humans, and other individuals.

Furthermore precision agriculture has helped farmers to make use of data and enhance their ability to apply glyphosate precisely at the precise areas and quantities.

グリホサート It is extremely rare for residues of pesticides will be discovered on food products. It is uncommon to detect glyphosate on food.

Glyphosate is used in sustainable farming practices

In an integrated pest/weed management system, farmers apply herbicides like glyphosate. They use more than one herbicide to fight the weeds. Glyphosate has enabled them to adopt conservation-tillage / non-till practices which provide long-term benefits to the soil, the air and the environment.

- Elimination or reduction of plowing/tilling of the land

Reduced CO2 emissions

Capturing carbon soil

- Improving soils ' health

- Reducing water flow and limiting erosion13

"No pesticide regulator around the globe considers that glyphosate poses an increased risk of cancer for human beings at present concentrations." -- Health Canada (January 11, 2019).

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. How to Feed the Whole World in 2050

It is more critical than ever to ensure that Canadian farmers are equipped with the latest technology, tools and support they require to support a growing population.

Through the use of good agricultural, pest management and food safety guidelines Farmers will ensure that our food is safe and plentiful. Glyphosate is just one of the tools they'll use to ensure that Canadians can access healthy, affordable food in the next generation.
