GlyphosateGlyphosate is a sustainable crop choice used by farmers to secure our food supply for the future.
It's not a surprise that the world's populace is increasing. The world is projected to have 9.7 billion people by 2050.1 The area of land that can be used for agriculture across the globe isn't growing at the same rate as ours. This presents significant challenges for farmers who are responsible for providing high-quality food for Canadians and others all over the world.

Canada is currently ranked 5th in global food exports.2 Canadian farmers will play an important role in supplying the food the world needs. They will face more demands than ever before and will also have to manage pests, diseases and weather fluctuations to ensure that their soil is fertile and productive for generations to come.

In order for the population to increase, 70% more food will be required by 2050. *Source How to Feed the World 2050, published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

Farmers cannot face this increasing demand by themselves. The latest technology and tools including herbicides, such as glyphosate , are used to help farmers effectively and efficiently manage weeds which results in an increased security and sustainability of food supply.

グリホサート 濃度 What exactly is glyphosate?

Glyphosate, a multi-purpose and non-selective herbicide, has been utilized by land managers, gardeners as well as farmers across the world for more than forty years. Glyphosate is a chemical that blocks the enzymes that plants, in this instance undesirable weeds, require to develop. The enzymes don't exist in humans or animals.4 So glyphosate doesn't pose a risk for the other.

Glyphosate can be utilized in other applications than agriculture. It's used in cities to safeguard animals and people from harmful plants.6 It's also used for railroads to enhance the visibility for conductors as well as prevent accidents on the tracks.

Recently, there's been an increase in attention paid to the use of glyphosate throughout our daily lives. While it's important to know what's in our food, it's worth noting that over 160 international health regulatory bodies, including Health Canada, agree that the safe use of glyphosate for humans is possible if carried out in a safe manner.

Canadians must be able to be aware of what glyphosate actually means and the way it is used and the effects it has on food production.

Why use glyphosate in agriculture?

グリホサート 稲 The agricultural use of herbicides based on glyphosate benefits consumers, farmers and the natural environment. It is crucial to effective control of weeds and food security as well as environmental sustainability. Let's take a look at each.

In the world, farmers are losing between 30-40% and 40% of their crops due to diseases, pests, and weeds.9 According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO) the losses could increase by a third if crop protection techniques are not used. グリホサート It's a terrible loss, especially for farmers who are able to claim that their crops are their livelihood.

It's not surprising that farmers have been relying on their tools each year. Applying glyphosate to fields -especially when it comes to glyphosate-tolerant crops -- is a proven way to stop destructive weeds from taking over their crops.9 As of now, no other weed control method can match the level effectiveness, both economically and economically.

Crops Vs. Weeds: A battle of their lives

Glyphosate offers the crops a fighting chance.

Canadians as well as global consumers enjoy the benefits of plentiful cheap, healthy food items

The population is growing and a significant portion of the food-growing land is at risk of becoming unusable in less than 40 years due to desertification and land degradation.10 This has led to an increase in food shortages. Canadians might have to pay as much as 55 percent more for food if they don't adopt the latest farming practices, such as using Glyphosate.11

Additionally, it would become increasingly difficult to obtain the food that we enjoy. However, the great news is that farmers can continue to produce our most loved food items thanks to the science of breeding plants.

グリホサート Glyphosate does more than manage the growth of weeds. It can also help keep food costs down at the supermarket. Glyphosate can also assist farmers to take care of the land that Cherilyn Jolli-Nagle Saskatchewan farmer, describes as "their most valuable asset", their land.

Make sure we have the foods we love on our table

Farmers can thrive when they use crop protection tools, such as glyphosate to protect crops from pests and diseases.

42% more grains such as corn and wheat

72% more fruit

83% More vegetables and potatoes12

The benefits are obvious. But is it safe to use glyphosate?

It is important to remember that all pesticides need to be used in accordance with label directions. Canada has two regulatory bodies that regulate glyphosate. One is the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which examines the crops to determine if there is any pesticide residue. and the Pest Management Regulating Agency (PMRA) is the one that provides the regulatory guidelines for product evaluations, approvals, and other guidelines (or refusals) and is the one with the most extensive evaluation processes across the globe.

https://agriknowledge.affrc.go.jp/RN/2010890726.pdf While regulatory agencies make sure that farmers use herbicides approved by the FDA, manufacturers and farmers also contribute to ensuring glyphosate is used safely and appropriately so that there are no potential harms to the animals, the environment or human.

Also, thanks to improvements in technology and use of precision agriculture, farmers are able to leverage information to be more precise when it comes to the application of glyphosate as to where it's used and how much is applied.150

Glyphosate residue is rarely detected in food items. It could cause harm if it is detected at certain limits. CFIA assures farmers that they apply herbicides in a safe manner and adhere to the established limits for residue16. It is not common and does not cause harm for human or animal health17.

Glyphosate usage as part of sustainable agriculture practices

Glyphosate is utilized by farmers as part of integrated pest and weed management methods. This means they are using more than herbicides to control the weeds. Glyphosate permits farmers to adopt conservation tillage/no-till practices that have long-term benefits for soil and air as well as the natural environment.

- Reduction or elimination plowing/tilling of the land

• Reduced CO2 emissions

Capturing carbon in the soil

- Improving soils health

- Stopping erosion and water runoff

"No pesticide regulatory authority anywhere in the world is currently assessing that glyphosate poses a cancer risk to humans at the levels at which people are exposed." -- Health Canada (January 11, 2019)

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. How to provide for the whole world by 2050

It is more important than ever making sure Canadian farmers have the tools, technology and assistance they require to meet the ever-growing food requirements of a growing populace.

Farmers can be expected to continue to preserve the quality and safety of our food by using the best agricultural and food protection and insect control practices. Glyphosate is one of the many instruments they'll employ to ensure Canadians as well as people all over the world are able to access healthy and affordable food, now and in the future.
