시력이 나쁜 눈을 잘 보이게 하기 위해서 또는 눈을 바람, 먼지, 강한 햇빛 따위로부터 보호하기 위하여 얼굴에 쓰는 물건이다.[2]
안경은 굴절이상[3]으로 인한 저시력을 극복시켜주는 도구[4]이지만 현대에는 안경이 하나의 패션 아이템으로 자리잡기도 한다. 실제로 네모난 안경은 약간 지적이면서 나이가 들어보이게 하고 동그란 형태의 안경은 약간 성격이 좋아보이게 하면서 어려보이게 할 수 있다. 간혹 착용자가 안경 타입(?)을 몇 년, 십여 년만에 바꾸면 정말 팍 늙거나 팍 젊어지거나 왠지 동안인 듯해 보이기도 하니 네모난 안경 착용자는 고려해보시길. 그러나 원래 눈이 작거나 처져서 안경으로 얼굴에 포인트를 주면 효과가 좋은 얼굴형이 아닌 이상 대부분은 안경을 끼면 답답해보이고 도수가 높은 렌즈일 때는 눈이 작아보이기[5] 때문에 안 끼는 것이 낫다. 반대로 원시여서 볼록렌즈를 꼈다면 왕눈이가 된다! 참고로, 이 현상은 부동시인 사람이 안경에 적응하지 못하는 가장 큰 이유이다. 도수 차이 때문에 양 눈에 비치는 물체의 크기가 달라지니, 적응하지 못하는 것이 당연한 것이다. 다만 좌우 렌즈의 도수를 다르게 하면 이를 해결할 수 있다.[6]
굳이 안경을 낄 필요가 없는 시력인데도 안경을 낄 수 있는데, 선글라스나 고글 같이 눈을 보호하기 위한 것에서부터 변장이나 패션 등을 위해 도수가 없는 렌즈 혹은 아예 렌즈가 없는 안경 등이 존재한다.[ ㄴㅇㄹㅇㄹ ]
