Video storage on the internet isn't reliable. Websites can shut down or even fail. Here's how you can back up your social media presence on your laptop.

My story isn't a huge one. I was born, went to school, worked, then finally found some information online. It also contains some very difficult times when I believed that everything was over. One of these moments was when my personal computer at home stopped working... After a little bit of tweaking, shifting my hard drive from the old to the new drive and getting an entirely new desktop, all my work was restored. It took me three days of sweating, and some metaphorical tears... But I learned one fact: Dropbox and personal FTP servers can be used to back up my daily work by hand or automatically.

This is definitely not the ideal solution. The more data stored online, the more you'll have to pay to allow the data to be kept online. It's easy and seems quite secure. It's also simple to download from any internet-connected device. But what happens if internet isn't available? I love keeping my laptop close to me during those times. It's my last line of defense against losing data. Two drives I have, which I use to create RAID stacks. They copy each other and have a backup to protect myself in case one of my HDDs is damaged. Since I don't copy much the laptop doesn't work very often. This is why I hope that not 2 drives go out simultaneously.

My other great day of sadness came a couple of years ago. As I've mentioned before, I make sure that I don't lose my work. I now copy the work multiple times and keep it on hand wherever internet connectivity is available. It was Periscope. I have used it quite a few years back, and even this last summer during the riots, I did a few live streams.. Then all of a sudden Periscope TV is closing, and all the videos will be gone in a couple of weeks. What can I do? All the videos need to be downloaded onto my laptop in order to save them offline. These are very special for me. It's the only time I've seen my friend, who vanished off the radar during Covid. It appears like Covid took him away.

It's a website that I frequently visit. It allows me to download video clips for Youtube, Instagram, and Facebook which are the other sites that host most of my live streaming. I'm interested in politics as well as underground movements, so I keep a record of a lot of live events and save them for future use. I then publish some videos on my YouTube channel and back it up onto my computer. This is how I operate. It lets me share videos on multiple platforms. It's flawless. The video I want to save on Periscope or Youtube is opened. I copy the URL by using the share button. Then, I go to the website for downloading videos and paste the link there, and in a matter of seconds I will see multiple choices for downloading videos. I can download it to my desktop or laptop, transfer it to other platforms, and then save it for my friends and loved ones. Periscope may not be accessible on all websites. The site has the ability to manage m3u8 files that other websites download for you. Then, I go to the site for downloading videos and copy my video's URL where they want it. After that, I hit the on the big button. Video is not downloaded to my computer, it's online and plays when player downloads small fragments of files one by one.

If you're not aware of this, Windows can utilize the copy command to help combine these fragments and create a normal one-long video file. This is due to the format used by video for creating the fragments, MpegTS, which is also known as a transport stream. It includes all the data needed for video decoding in each of the fragments and makes them separate from the stream and allowing each newcomer to begin streaming in a seamless manner. The program also stores data on the browser as it downloads files of 360x10 seconds instead of the standard 1hr file. So, when you only watch 25 seconds of the stream, it will only download 4-6 fragments. (It will download 3-4 fragments from the current 25 second segment, and 1 or 2 additional fragments should you continue to watch the stream). This lets you reduce the amount of data you need by downloading just 25 seconds of video stream.
