When I first met the team working on Deepworld, an 2D Sandbox-style building game that is similar to Minecraft at GDC in March, I told them that Deepworld would be more than they had imagined. They have a lot of experience in the development of servers and software, however, running a game of this size requires an investment of significant size. They seem to have reached an agreement. The game has inspired the idea of a Kickstarter project to try and raise some funds for servers and development.
The group is offering a variety of prizes to its supporters such as your personal servers and worlds, art books and other swag, as well as the possibility of getting your own items, your name, or even pictures in the game itself. Minecraft Survival Games Servers is US$20,000 and the team has raised approximately $4,000. They say they want to take the project on full-time and this money will enable them to accomplish that goal.
I hope they have a great time. Deepworld looks great and, as I mentioned when I first saw it I think the Mac (and iOS) would benefit from a game like this.
