WRUP: You Think You're Beautiful

We all want to be attractive. Let's just come right out and say that we'd like to be stunning. If we were all searingly pretty, we would probably not all stay in the house and play video games. This particular writer, for instance is not a butterfly and more like an unholy union between a chimpanzee and a slime from the Dragon Quest series. The reality can be quite brutal at times.



To cope with this harsh reality We all have our favorite MMOs that we can play whenever the opportunity arisesas it is with this week's WRUP. And with the recent success of the quasi-MMO Minecraft, we asked everyone how important it was that the games they play be pretty. Look over the cut for our answers and tell us in the comments what you're going to be playing during the weekend! Beau Hindman (@Beau_Hindman): I'll be playing DIGDIGDIG a little bit of DIGDIGDIGDIG everything and am getting ready to leave for DIGDIGDIG GDC. I may DIGDIG some time to DIGDIGDIGDIGDIG play a bit of Minecraft also.



Graphics? Nah. It's all about the game.



Brianna Royce (@nbrianna) Then I look back at older WRUPs and realize that I am so boring... I'm still having lots of fun in City of Heroes. I think I'm trying to get it done because I know that my guild will flourish as soon as Cataclysm launches. I recently put together an all-new tanker and wow! I can remember why I normally stick to controllers.



I don't consider myself an expert on graphics, as I play a lot of older games. Heck, I'm considering playing the new Ultima Online boats expansion! A game needs to have something to offset the ugly aspects, a few little bits of nostalgia, amazing strokes of gameplay or riveting stories. A gorgeous game with bad gameplay however? I'm not even going to give it a second glance.



Edward Marshall: If I have time, I'll play Fallen Earth.



Graphics aren't that important to me. However, in the present day and age, I think that ASCII is better than the very minimum.



Eliot Lefebvre: Final Fantasy XIV, naturally. Final Fantasy XIV is my most played game of the moment. I'm currently on a quest to find myself some more powerful weapons and armor that aren't as fast, but all the more enjoyable for the way it's presented. I'm also thinking about taking a break to browse through my massive collection of console games.



Simple graphics don't bother me however there must be a reason. Stylized graphics are different from games that appear like plain ugly. Of course, the line between "stylized" and "bad" is pretty subjective.



Greg Waller: I've been paying a lot of time and energy on WAR lately, and I plan to keep this up through the weekend as I work to level my new enthusiasm for Badlands through Tier 3. Concerning the bonus question: Eye candy does not make a good game. I can live with sub-par graphics but if the gameplay is better.



Jef Reahard, I'll be playing Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock, specifically Rush 2112. I enjoyed hearing it blast my eardrums last night in Atlanta. Yeah, I know music games are so 2007 but whatever. If I manage to play any MMO, it will be my usual AoC/EQII with an occasional side dish of FFXIV.



Krystalle Voecks (@Krystalle) She said: I'm reinstalling everything after upgrading my desktop, so I foresee many, many hours of downloading and install fun this weekend. Other than that, it's more Vanguard and I've been reading the old Masquerade WoD sourcesbooks.



Graphics are our favorite thing to do. One Shots is a fantastic example of this. But, I don't think it's the only method to play a game. Minecraft is successful because it's fun and lets people express their creativity and not because it's visually stunning.



Lisa Poisso, @emused: We were looking over old WoW alts and decided on an entirely new race/class combination for Cataclysm. The graphics were not as important to me until I went back to read original EQ. If EverQuest's graphics were updated to the latest standards, I would play it again in a flash. However, as it stands, the graphics are a major turn-off.



Patrick Mackey: My computer is having issues at the moment. However, if it works, World of Tanks will be my next game. I'll be putting in some time playing Champions as well. I heard that Demonflame is coming out on Friday, PTS.
Minecraft servers


As a person who plays StarCraft II on the lowest graphics settings, I'd have to say that graphics rarely matter. However, Minecraft fails because things aren't easily visible in that game. Visuals are supposed to show the player what's taking place in the game. If this isn't evident, then the art designers have failed.
