Mojang's team will join Microsoft Studios, which includes the studios that created global blockbuster franchises "Halo," "Forza," "Fable" and more. Microsoft's investments in mobile and cloud technology will allow "Minecraft" players to benefit from richer and faster worlds with more powerful tools for development, and more opportunities to connect across the "Minecraft" community.
Microsoft will buy Mojang in accordance with the agreement worth $2.5 billion.
Mojang:
Minecraft has evolved from a simple game to a project of monumental significance. While we're extremely satisfied with what Minecraft has grown into It was never Notch's intention for it to get this big.
As you might already know, Notch is the creator of Minecraft and the majority shareholder at Mojang. He's decided that he doesn't want to be the owner of a company of immense global importance. In the past, he's attempted to develop smaller projects however the pressure of managing Minecraft was too difficult to bear. Mojang was his only option. He'll still do amazing things, however. Don't fret.
There are only a handful of potential buyers with the resources to grow Minecraft to the size it deserves. We've worked closely with Microsoft since 2012 and have been impressed by their commitment to our game and its development. We're confident that Minecraft will continue to grow in a phenomenal way.
Markus "Notch” Persson:
I don't see myself as a true game developer. I make games for fun and because I love programming and games. However, I don't design games with the intention of making them huge successes. I also don't intend to make a difference in the world. Minecraft certainly became a huge success and people are telling me it's changed the game. I never intended to change anything in the first place. It's a nice compliment, and it's interesting to slowly get in the spotlight.
I'm not sure what to do with this.
Update (2014-09-19: Josh Centers):
Minecraft is the most amazing game I've ever played. It's a sandbox-like game, part world-builder and part exploration game as well as a farming simulator and part role-playing game. It has a "conclusion" of kind (that you must discover on your own) however, it doesn't really end. You can play alone or with other players and even run your own Minecraft server and invite only your friends to play on it. It's easy to spend countless hours in Minecraft, and millions of players already have.

It's obvious to me. Games Microsoft has decided that if Apple goes hi-hi-res in their retina screens or operating system, Microsoft cannot differentiate itself. Instead, they will "bet the entire company on red" and switch to low-res.
Imagine Windows Explorer with folder icons with resolution of 8x8
:-)
"I don't know what to make of this."
Minecraft is the biggest thing that happened to games since Pokemon. Everybody plays the game, and if Minecraft is properly managed it could be one of the most popular well-known, popular, and influential franchises for at least another decade.
Games are extremely important to Microsoft as they are among the main drivers to sell new Windows PCs (and thus Windows licenses) and also because of the Xbox. Microsoft has attempted to develop games that were a bit like Minecraft in the past (Viva Pinata, Kodu, Project Spark) but they've more or less been unsuccessful.
Sony already owns the Little Pig Planet franchise, and Nintendo is now entering the "creative games that let you create things, not just eating items" field with Mario Maker for the Wii U. I think a lot of companies assume that these kinds of games will be increasingly important. They're also correct I believe.
