In a proud attempt to squash Avatar's $2.78 billion record for box office revenue, Disney is rereleasing Avengers: Endgame with additional post-credits scenes. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Screen Rant that the new version is not an extended cut but a second version "with some marketing push and a few additions at the close of the movie."
"If you continue to watch the film after the credits are over, there'll be an unfinished scene and a few tributes, and even a few surprises" He added.
The new release is believed to attempt to close the nearly $4 million gap between Endgame and Avatar, which holds the record for the record-breaking worldwide gross of all time (unadjusted to inflation). The rerelease is expected to be in theaters on June 28 which is a less busy weekend to film releases and one week prior to when Spider-Man: Far From Home is released. Just like Captain Marvel got a boost when Endgame first came out, the hope is that the Spider-Man movie will achieve what it did for Avengers movie.
Usually, films get rereleased on occasion to mark milestones in time or to allow a film to get a new push during awards season. Two years ago, Dunkirk returned to theaters in the midst of awards season. In this March, A Star Is Born was rereleased and included 12 more minutes of footage aimed at fans interested in taking another look. In the words of Feige, the Endgame release seems to be unique for it being a completely unapologetic film for box-office. As always, Disney's real expertise lies in knowing how to generate revenue.
