Overview

Vanilla Minecraft can be fun, but it may get old-fashioned after a while. Mojang can bring new features to the game, however, you don't need to wait for them to add new features. This can help reduce boredom in your server. Plugins are a great way to do this.



Plugins are server-side components of software that allow you to add features to servers without the need to make any client-side changes that you would require with mods. There are hundreds of thousands of plugins that are available across the internet so there is almost never a moment where you won't find something you're looking for or require.



To install plugins, your server has to be running either Spigot or Paper as the server version. Both allow plugins from Spigot and Bukkit websites. If you're not sure how to change your server's version, check our guide on this here.





How to Install Plugins through the Plugin List

Apex Hosting have a fantastic list of plugins from Bukkit and Spigot that is directly integrated into your panel. This is the simplest way to install plugins on Java servers.



1. Login to your Apex Hosting Panel and select the server you want to install the plugins too.


2. Select Plugin List on the left side of the panel.


3. You can select to use Spigot or Bukkit as your source. The only difference is the results you get. Both plugins must work on the server.


4. You can look up specific names for plugins or search by category. When you have found a plugin that you would like to install, click it.





5. Make sure that the compatible version is listed at the top of this page for your server version. If your server is running Paper 1.16.5 you will want to make sure there is an option that says compatibility with 1.16.


6. Once you have verified that the version you're using is compatible, you can choose it from the Version dropdown menu. After that, click Install to the right! You can confirm the installation has completed by looking at your server console.





7. Once the process is complete be sure to restart your server in order for the plugin to load.







How to Install Plugins Using FTP

Sometimes the plugin list may not have what you are seeking. You might have to search online for an exact plugin Jar file download. There are numerous popular places to download plugins, including the SpigotMC website and the Dev Bukkit website, and sometimes from the github pages of the developers. The most effective method to search for the plugin online is to simply type the name or keywords.



1. You can download the plugin jar file online.





2. Log in to your panel by going to the FTP File Access tab.


3. After you have logged in, locate and click on the plugins folder.





4. Once you're in the plugins folder, click upload to the left, then drag into your Jar file.





5. Once the file has been uploaded to 100% after which you can return to the main panel page.


6. The server should be restarted to allow the plugin to load.







Common Problems


Plugins not loading:




Sometimes, plugins won't start loading after restarting the server. You can determine if a plugin is loaded by running /plugins inside the game. If it's green, it is loaded. If it's not on the list, or red, there may be an issue. Make sure the plugin is compatible to your server version. Also, check the plugin's page to make sure it doesn't contain any dependency plugins. Sometimes, if you reboot the server and look at the console output, it will inform you what error it is giving you, or what plugin it requires to function.




Plugin List Download Failure:




If you attempt to download a plugin using the Plugin List in your panel and it shows you errors like "Error downloading plugin", this could indicate that there is a problem with the source site of the plugin. If this occurs, we recommend that you install the plugin on your server using the FTP section of this guide.




No Plugins Folder




If you attempt to manually install plugins onto your server but are unable to locate the plugins folder, it is possible that your server doesn't accept plugins. Or you may have forgotten about restarting after changing versions to Spigot/Paper. Make sure your server is compatible by looking up the version you want to use in the Jar File dropdown on your panel. Some compatible versions include Spigot, Paper and Magma.
