Before you drive yet you know that you can't really drive yourself home, you better hand on your keys to someone. You should think twice before driving when you are drunk. You do not only put yourself at a great risk when you are drunk yet you want to drive but you also put the life of other passengers on the road that may cross your path. If you do not worry about drinking and driving, better think of the fortune it will cost you later.

Getting a sponsor - Ideally to make the program really work you need to ask someone to mentor you. In alcoholics anonymous this person is called a sponsor. Commonly someone who has not been drinking for some time and it is someone you can phone at anytime of night or day for advice or if you are feeling the need for a drink. Getting a sponsor is often very daunting as most people worry the person will say no, as in many cases they are already sponsoring someone and may not want to take anyone else on, and this is where things can go wrong as if you ask two people and they both turn you down it can leave you not wanting to go to Alcoholics Anonymous anymore.

If you are like most people, the problem isn't new. On average people can suffer for a decade or more with a drinking problem before finally raising the white flag and asking for surrender.

But as mentioned earlier, alcohol related deaths have been dropping. In 25 years we have seen a 35% decrease. Not that we are winning the war against alcohol related death and injury, but we have lessened it a little.

AA is not a cult. There is no one person in charge (really), no devotion to a particular figure, historical or living, nor to a set of rules, ceremonies or liturgy. The nature of an alcoholic is rebellious. If you want to see and hear pandemonium break out, just suggest to a group of AA-ers they should approach the program in a certain way or even act at a meeting in some pre-approved manner. Then stand back and keep the exit door in view for your own safety.

Take the time to educate yourself on the charges against you. It is important to understand and use the jargon that would be used by a drunk driving attorney so you can understand what is going on during the consultation. You do not have to stick with the first attorney you meet with. You should shop around to find the one that is right for you.

And there isn't any Santa Claus either. The ugly truth is that the days of the friendly beat cop walking down main street making friendly with the local town folk and business owners is long gone. The police have a difference mission. You've heard the old adage about you get what you measure. Well, cops are measured by the tickets they write and arrests that they make. If they aren't writing tickets and making arrests, they aren't getting promoted.
