Despite the government's ban on gambling, Thai lottery is very popular. It is played by approximately 19 million Thais. However, most players fail to win. Those who do win must visit the Government Lottery Office (GLO) in Bangkok to claim their prize.
The lottery is held twice a month. The results are announced on the first and sixteenth days of the month. Tickets are sold by agents and retailers. The cost of the ticket is usually 100 baht.
เลขสูตรสำเร็จเงินล้าน are printed on special paper, which is coated with chemicals. The tickets feature six-digit numbers, along with a silk thread and a two-tone watermark. The numbers below the winning first prize number are two-digits, while the numbers above it are three-digits.
The lottery is organized by the Government Revenue Department. The lottery was first drawn to provide financial aid to Thailand during World War I. After the war, the lottery was used to fund social benefits.
In 1932, the lottery was used to raise money for social advantages. The government then began to organize the lottery process to provincial municipalities and regional municipalities. It was also used to raise funds for the Thai Red Cross charity. The process was halted for ten years, but was resumed in 1934.
The Thai government is now planning to computerize its lottery services. It will sell tickets to brokers who will then distribute them to a network of more than fourteen thousand authorized retail venues. It will also sell tickets to national wholesalers.
