An American in Vietnam
The first novel from former U.S. Navy navigator James Whitfield Thomson is set during the Vietnam War. Thomson, a native of Natick, Massachusetts, is a writer, traveler, and author. His writing has been featured in many books and magazines, and he was a member of Andre Dubus's writers' workshop. He lives in Massachusetts. James Whitfield Thomson

In his debut novel, LIES YOU WANTED TO HEAR, Jim Whitfield Thomson focuses on the life of a man who has lost everything. While growing up on the North Side of Pittsburgh, Thomson attended Harvard College on a scholarship. After serving in the Navy during the Vietnam War, he earned his Ph.D. in American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Thomson currently lives in Natick, Massachusetts. He has been a member of Andre Dubus's writers' workshop since 1996, and his fiction has received many awards.

Author

Former sales executive and U.S. Navy navigator James Whitfield Thomson has released his first novel. This novel is about a marriage gone wrong. In the story, Matt abducted the couple's children, told them the mother died, and started a new life. Thomson was inspired by a series of articles in the Boston Globe on Stephen Fagan, who abducted his two daughters and raised them as a single father.

Born in Pittsburgh, Ohio, Thomson attended Harvard College on a scholarship. After a short service in the Navy, he went on to earn a Ph.D. in American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. After finishing his degree, he joined a start-up company, but soon realized that he liked writing more. Since then, he has published two novels, Agni and The Ledge, and received a grant from the Massachusetts Council on the Arts.

His life story is based on his experiences in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

While on the field, American military officers were obtuse. They believed that victories would lead to peace in South Vietnam. In fact, the CIA explained that the North Vietnamese were responding defensively to American attacks on off-shore islands, which was never confirmed. The Pentagon also hoped to end the insurgency by December 1965, but the German government refused to send even a medical unit.

Traveler

The author of "Lies You Wanted to Hear" has been writing since he was twenty years old. He spent 20 years writing his debut novel, about a marriage gone bad. The book follows Matt, a fugitive who abducted his wife's children and told them that their mother is dead. Thomson was inspired by articles about Stephen Fagan, a Boston Globe reporter who abducted his two daughters and raised them as a single father.
