His debut novel

The Ledge is a fascinating debut novel from a U.S. Navy veteran, a former sales executive, and an early member of Andre Dubus's writers' workshop. The book follows a Vietnamese veteran, a young man in the middle of his life, who must decide whether to go home or stay in the country. Despite his military background, Thomson has a deeply personal approach to writing.

Thomson wrote the book in his library, where he spent two years composing his manuscripts. After completing the novel, he spent a year looking for a publisher. In the end, he chose Sourcebooks Landmark, which has published two editions totaling 22,000 books. While his novel may not be perfect, readers will find it affecting. The story is full of surprises, such as the unexpected ending to one of the main characters' lives.
