I'd like to be able to share a tale which happened to me during a vacation that I went aboard a boat through the Arctic. It sounded wonderful, National Geographic trip thru frozen ice to return, with Polar bears and various other species. There was going to be ice everywhere, snow everywhere. Man-made machines were designed to beat the elements and break through the frozen wilderness of the northern wilderness. It sounded like a magnificent project, a massive battle with the north weather, the north pole.

However, no restaurant or cafe will be able to help you further north, and a few hours from the nearest shack that has electricity produced by a weak generator.. There is no free Internet available. Two alternatives are available in these circumstances: turn off your internet and bring your satellite connection.


I can't afford to purchase a satphone, it is expensive, particularly for Internet. Before I leave for the dark, I'll have a large audio and video library. Last time , I had 2 songs that were both mockingly downloaded back in the day and all I was able to listen to was three jazzy songs and some famous song I didn't know the title. This is it. 4 songs over 2 weeks of no time. I would have prepared for this if I knew. I would have packed my computer with shows from television and movies as well as lots of music videos. I could have spent hours listening to my favorite podcasts. It's easy to download the podcasts, convert them to MP3 and save them on my computer. It is then easy to relax in my bed and enjoy whatever it is I would like to hear at home but don't have time for. It would be my "golden hour", or 2 weeks worth of gold. Instead it was two weeks staring at the ceiling, running to meet passengers each when there's a sound in the corridors.

The trip was empty literally and figuratively. I've never been this bored. I knew the problem would eventually arise from the thick ice, and so the boat was forced to turn around and be pulled back to the shores of civilization. It was not a surprise. But, the hours and hours of idle time could have been listening to podcasts, watching DIY videos on home repair, or simply enjoying music. Next time I will convert Youtube videos into mp4 and MP3 formats on my laptop.
