Manga berasal dari bahasa Jepang yang berarti “Komik”dalam bahasa Indonesia. Secara harfiah, manga memiliki arti “Gambar Aneh” atau"sketsa spontan". Manga telah diterjemahkan ke dalam beberapa bahasa di negara-negara di luar Jepang termasuk Cina, Perancis, Italia, Malaysia, Indonesia dan lainnya.
Manga khas Jepang umumnya menggunakan gaya sederhana dalam menggambar. Ciri khasnya adalah
- mata besar
- mulut kecil
- hidung sejumput.
Tapi tidak semua manga digambarkan dengan sederhana. Beberapa mangaka menggunakan style yang realistis, walaupun dalam beberapa elemen masih bisa dikategorikan manga. Namun, gambar latar belakangnya hampir semua manga digambarkan serealistis mungkin. Manga biasanya dicetak hitam-putih, namun ada juga beberapa yang berwarna (colorfull).
Sejarah Manga.
Manga di Jepang diawali pada jaman Edo, di mana seorang pemahat kayu dan pelukis bernama Katsushika Hokusai(1760 –1849), menciptakan istilah Hokusai Manga pada serial sketsanya yang berjumlah 15 volume dan diterbitkan pada tahun 1814. Hokusai itu sendiri berasal dari 2 huruf Cina yang memiliki arti “gambar manusia untuk menceritakan sesuatu”.
