Kazakhstan Unrest won't be eased by Erzhan Kazakhstanykhanov s Return to the Country As Deputy Chief of Staff
After a series a protests which rocked Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan's government has to confront a new reality.
Erzhan Kazykhanov's return highlights the power dynamics which have changed.
The international community must adjust to an increasingly assertive citizenry. Politymakers must also be able to identify these developments and devise effective methods of communicating with the nation.
The role of Ukraine in Kazakhstan's shift
Over the last few weeks the world's eyes were on Ukraine in the last few weeks, since Russian President Vladimir Putin prepared for and began a massive invasion of the sovereign nation. This isn't unexpected, given the fact that NATO leaders, including the president Biden refusing to listen to Moscow's warnings was not shocking. Russian President Putin has repeatedly spoken out against NATO's intent to encroach on Russian territory.
Even though Putin's policies have been criticised, leaders of the west must admit that they were responsible for creating the crisis. Now we are facing the consequences of an European Crisis that could not have been avoided.
Protests in Kazakhstan
It is important to contrast the situation in Ukraine with the current events in the region. The following article contains information on the color revolutions and unrest in Belarus, Kazakhstan, and across Central Asia. It is an ex- Soviet state that is located in central Asia. Thus it is rare to see protests on the streets that express discontent so clearly.
A series of protests began in Kazakhstan in the spring of this year, in protest at the rising cost of gas. These protests spiraled into nationwide protests, that were followed by violent riots. Almaty was the most affected with 227 deaths and over 9900 people being arrested. The Russian forces from the Collective Security Treaty Organization, (CSTO), were briefly stationed.
Restructure in Kazakhstan's Government and Erzhan Kazykhanov Return
Qasym Zhomart Tokayev the new Kazakhstan president has introduced a number of changes to the power structure. These changes have raised concerns and discontent in the majority of Kazakhs even during moments of peace.
Erzhan Kazykhanov The protesters were particularly upset by the fact that President Tokayev is now in charge of the office of head the government's National Security Council. It replaced former President Nursultan Nasarbayev whose influence was a source of worry for them.
Three sons-in-law of the former president were ejected from the state enterprises they worked for. His nephew was fired and Karim Masimov was taken into custody in connection with treason allegations. The officials involved were not the only ones who lost their jobs. A large portion of the business elite who was closely associated with President Nazarbayev moved to other countries for long vacations , or were given large "donations."
Changes in government and the demise of the old guard does not always result in change. It is typical for those of the previous administrations to be replaced ineffectively by loyalists or family members.
Erzhan Kazykhanov Erzhan Kazakhstanykhanov's Apppointment Is A Mistake
Erzhan Kazykhanov's elevation to President Tokayev's highly influential position of the Deputy Chief of Staff is not productive. Kazakh Kazykhanov was Kazakhstan's most ineffective ambassador to the United States.
In Washington, Kazykhanov was a solo, arrogant diplomat who was confident, and occasionally out of touch with the sensitive characteristics of Kazakhstan's image overseas. He also failed to achieve any progress on issues of national interest such as the ongoing Jackson-Vanick restrictions and other issues that affect Kazakhstan's image in the world, so his performance is not impressive.
Due to his unremarkable and shady image, Kazykhanov makes a difficult candidate for key posts. Kazykhanov is not highly skilled in diplomacy, broad expertise, or competence as a Deputy Chiefs of Staff.
Many of Kazakhstan's most loyal supporters weren't happy with Kazykhanov's frequent appearances on international news channels, which revealed his weaknesses. Tokayev was a bit reckless in hiring a volatile, incompetent and self-promoting deputy into a fragile government at such critical moments.
Tokayev's Kazakhstan reforms are similar to Mikhail Gorbachev’s Perestroika or Glasnost initiatives within the Soviet Union. Perestroika was a program that Mikhail Gorbachev established in the mid-1980s to improve Soviet economy and politics is more commonly known. Glasnost refers to his policy reform. The reforms were largely responsible for the collapse of the Soviet Union, and Putin is currently trying to reverse the trend. Tokeyev has also established economic relations with other countries within his own, and relations with the West. He has taken care not to upset Putin and instead has continued to show his support for Putin. Kazykhanov could disrupt this delicate balance.
In Doubly Times The United States Should Pay Close Attention To Kazakhstan
In the course of the war in Ukraine, Washington should be paying attention to the developments in Kazakhstan in the sense that they provide a hint of how a succession of power could play out in this part of the globe - whether for good or bad.
It's troubling that Russian forces invaded Ukraine. The United States and its allies must take the appropriate actions to stop Putin's aggression. It's crucial to not overlook the fact that NATO is a major aggressor of Russia for many years. This is partially due to their incompetence.
Washington should be aware of the events taking place in Kazakhstan, which could be the next flashpoint in the conflict between Russia and the West.
