The online video storage service is not reliable Sites can close or break. Here's how to backup your social video presence to your laptop.

My story isn't a big one. I was born in America attended school as a worker, then found my first job online. But it does contain some devastating moments where I thought that my life was done. One of these moments was when my home computer stopped working... But after a bit of playing around, getting a new desktops and moving the hard drive from the old into new one, I was able to restore all my work stored on the drive. It took 3 days of sweating, figuratively crying... I've learned one thing. Automatically or manually back up my entire day's work with Dropbox and personal FTP servers to ensure that nothing can ever be erased.

It's not the ideal solution. The larger your online data storage becomes the more you will need to spend to keep everything in it, to keep it running. It's easy to use and seems very safe. It's also very easy to download it from any internet-connected device. What about those times when internet access isn't possible? I prefer to keep my laptop close by for those moments. It's my last protection against data loss. I have 2 drives, each with an RAID stack. They copy each other and ensure there is at least one copy if one of the HDDs is destroyed. I copy only data there to ensure that the laptop does not fail.


Another big day of sadness occurred a few months ago. I make sure that I don't lose any work. As I mentioned I have backup copies of it many times. Also, it is available online at any time internet connectivity is accessible. This was Periscope. I had used it quite often some time ago. Even during the last summer 2020 riots, I participated in some live streaming streams. Periscope TV closed suddenly and all the videos will vanish in a matter of weeks. What can I do? It lets me share videos on multiple platforms. I can share YouTube videos on Facebook and upload the video to Facebook. Every video is a separate video. So I am able to store 3TB of live feeds I've done over the past 8 years. Periscope lives never cease to exist.. I find this website extremely helpful.

It's as if it's magic. After opening the video I'd like to watch I copy the URL by clicking the sharing link. Then I visit the video downloading site, copy the URL and press the big button. In a matter of moments, I'm presented with multiple options to download video. Periscope is not available on all sites. The site is able to manage m3u8 file that other sites download for you. Then, I go to the video downloader site and copy my video's URL in the location they prefer. Then, I press the large button. Video is not downloaded to my personal computer, but it's available online and can be played online as the player loads tiny fragments each time.

You can make windows copy to put these fragments together and then create a normal 1 long video file. This happens due to the video format used for the video fragments - Mpeg TS, also known as transport stream. The stream is comprised of all the details needed to decode every fragment. They are independent of each other, allowing each new user to stream effortlessly. It also helps save data since it only downloads files which are relevant to what you are viewing. For example, if you only view only 25 seconds of the stream the player downloads only 3-4 fragments. In addition, it may download the next 1-2 fragments. This decreases the download time to only 25 seconds prior to the start of the stream.
