It's evident that the world's populations are growing. The population of the world will increase to 9.7 billion by 2050.1 But, it's not happening on the planet's agricultural land. This poses serious problems for farmers responsible for producing enough food of high-quality for Canadians and other countries all over the world.
Canada is currently the fifth-largest exporter of food globally.2 Canadian farmers are expected to play a crucial role in providing the world the food that it needs. They'll need to be able meet the growing demand.
Farmers will require 70% more food production by 2050 to meet the growing number of people. *Source How to Food the World in 2050 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

Farmers aren't prepared to deal with this rising demand. The good news is that modern tools and technology that include herbicides such as glyphosate, can help farmers control weeds more precisely and efficiently, which results in a more sustainable and secure food supply.
What exactly is glyphosate?
Glyphosate is a versatile and non-selective herbicide has been used by land managers, gardeners, and farmers around the world for more than 40 years. It does this by triggering an enzyme needed by plants to grow, in this case undesirable weeds. Glyphosate is safe for both animals and people if it is used in a safe manner.
There are other uses for glyphosate, too. It is employed in municipalities to protect the public and wildlife against poisonous weeds.6 Furthermore, it's used to prevent burning and ensure visibility on railway tracks.
グリホサート In recent times, there's been a heightened level of attention on the use of glyphosate in our daily lives. While it's important to consider the ingredients in our food and drinks It is also crucial to know that over 160 health regulatory authorities including Health Canada have agreed that glyphosate when used correctly is safe for consumption by humans.
Canadians will be better able to understand what glyphosate is, how it works and why it's vital to the production of food.
Why use glyphosate in agriculture?
Glyphosate based herbicides have many advantages for farmers, consumers and the environment. It is essential to efficient control of weeds, a safe food supply and environmental sustainability. Let's dive deeper into each of the benefits.
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization these losses could increase by up to a two times if they're not properly secured. This is a devastating loss especially for farmers who are able to claim that their crops are their main source of income.
It's no surprise that farmers depend on reliable tools year after année. The application of glyphosate to fields that have glyphosate-tolerant crops is a proven method of keeping harmful weeds away from the crops.
Crops Vs. Weeds: The fight of their lives
The crops of a farmer will have to compete with up to 30,000 species of weeds to get space food, water, nutrients and light.9 Glyphosate gives crops an opportunity to fight.
Canadians as well as global consumers benefit from the abundance of and affordable food options.
This is increasing the amount of food that is insecure. Without modern farming innovations such as the use of glyphosate Canadians might have to spend 55% more on food.11
In addition, our favourite food items will become harder to find. But the positive side is that farmers will continue to produce our most loved food items thanks to the science behind plant breeding.
Glyphosate is more than just a way to ensure that your produce is affordable. Glyphosate can also aid farmers in caring for their biggest asset that which Cherilyn Jolly Nagle from Mossbank, Saskatchewan, says is their land.

Crop protection tools such as glyphosate may be employed to guard crops from pests and diseases. Farmers are able to grow.
42% more grain such as corn and wheat
72% more fruit
83% more vegetables and potatoes12
The benefits are evident. Is glyphosate safe to use?
Simply put, absolutely. Like all pesticides you must follow the directions on the label. The glyphosate usage regulation in Canada is controlled by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The agency examines crops for pesticide residue to ensure that farmers use it in a safe manner. The agency also oversees the Pest Management Regulation Agency (PMRA) that provides guidelines, evaluations of submissions to the product and rejections or approvals. They are home to one of the most thorough evaluation procedures anywhere in the world.
In addition to ensuring that the herbicides that are approved for use are properly used by farmers, regulatory agencies make sure that the appropriate and safe use of glyphosate is maintained by producers, farmers as well as animals, so that there is no risk caused to the environment or other animals.
In addition precision agriculture has helped farmers to make use of data and enhance their ability to apply glyphosate at the precise places and in the exact amounts.
グリホサート It is extremely rare that glyphosate will be found on food. CFIA assures farmers that they are using herbicides correctly and working within established residue limits16. It is extremely rare that glyphosate is detected in food products at a low level that are well beneath the Canadian Government's limit.17 Since it does not cause any harm to humans or animals18.
グリホサート Glyphosate usage as part of sustainable farming practices
Farmers utilize herbicides, such as glyphosate, as part of an integrated approach to pest and weed management. That means they use more than just herbicides to control weeds. Glyphosate enabled farmers to adopt conservation/no-till methods that provide long-term benefits to the soil and air.
To decrease or stop tilling or plowing
- Cut CO2 emissions
- Capturing carbon in soil
- Improve soil health
- Reducing water runoff and limiting erosion13
"No pesticide regulator anywhere in the world has ever considered the glyphosate ingredient to pose a risk of cancer to humans at current concentrations." -- Health Canada (January 11, 2019).
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
Making sure Canadian farmers have the equipment, tools and support they need to meet the growing food supply demands of a growing population is more important now than ever before.
Good agricultural, food safety and pest control methods will help farmers are able to continue protecting our food supply. グリホサート Glyphosate is one of many tools they will use to ensure that Canadians, and people around the world are able to access healthy and affordable food--now and in the future.
