It's no secret that the world's population is increasing. The world is projected to be home to 9.7 billion people by 2050.1 Unfortunately, the agricultural land around the globe isn't expanding at the same pace as ours. This poses significant challenges to farmers that are responsible for providing high-quality food for Canadians as well as other people worldwide.
Canada is currently ranked 5th in global food exports.2 Canadian farmers will play an important role in supplying the food we need. They will have to provide more food than ever before.
For the population to grow 70 percent more food will be required by 2050. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations' How to Feed the World in 2050*
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations How to Feed the Planet in 2050
Farmers aren't prepared to deal the increasing demand. Modern technology, like herbicides and glyphosate, are able to aid farmers in controlling the weeds effectively and efficiently. This means a more sustainable and stable food supply.
What exactly is Glyphosate?
Glyphosate is a powerful, non-selective herbicide used by gardeners, land managers farmers, gardeners and others all over the world for over 40+ years. It is a chemical that blocks the activity of enzymes that the plants (in this example, unwanted plants) require to develop. The enzymes aren't present in humans, or in other animals.4 Thus, glyphosate is zero risk for any plant in the event that it is used correctly.
Glyphosate has many other uses that go beyond agriculture. It is used in municipalities to protect wildlife and the public from harmful weeds.6 Furthermore, it's employed to stop burning and ensure accessibility on railway tracks.
Recently, there's been an increase in attention paid to the use of glyphosate throughout our daily lives. While it's important for us to ask questions about the food we consume but it's important to note the fact that over 160 international regulatory organizations (including Health Canada) agree that glyphosate can be safely employed when done in a safe manner.
Canadians must be able to understand what glyphosate means, how it is used and what it does for food production.
Why should glyphosate be used in agriculture?
Consumers, farmers, as well as the environment all benefit from the use of herbicides containing glyphosate in agriculture. It is key to effective weed control, a secure food supply and sustainable environmental sustainability. グリホサート Let's look deeper at each benefit.
グリホサート In the world farmers lose between 30 and 40 percent of their crops due to pests, weeds, and disease.9 Without the use of crop protection practices, these losses could double according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. This is devastating, particularly for farmers who depend on those crops to support their families.
Therefore, it's no wonder that farmers are beginning to rely on tools they can rely on, year after year. https://agriknowledge.affrc.go.jp/RN/2010890726.pdf Glyphosate is a chemical that can be applied to crops that are resistant to glyphosate. It is a tried and tested method for controlling destructive herbicides.
Crops and. weeds--the fight of their life
Glyphosate can give crops a chance to win against up to 30,000 weed species for light, space, nutrients, and water.
Canadians as well as consumers around the world, enjoy the benefits of plentiful and inexpensive food
This is causing a rise in the amount of food that is insecure. Canadians might have to pay as much as 55% more to buy food if they don't adopt the latest farming practices including the use of Glyphosate.11
It would also make it harder for us to find the food we are drawn to. グリホサート Science-based agriculture will enable farmers to grow our favorite staple foods for many more years.
Glyphosate isn't just used to manage weeds and ensure that you can afford produce at the grocery store However, it also helps to keep produce at a reasonable price. グリホサート Glyphosate is also used by farmers to manage what Cherilyn Joy-Nagle from Mossbank in Saskatchewan refers to as "their most valuable asset"--their land.
Make sure we have the foods we love on our tables
Farmers can thrive when they use crop protection tools such as glyphosate to protect crops from pests and diseases.
42% more grains, like wheat and corn
72% more fruit
83% more vegetables and potatoes12
These benefits are obvious. グリホサート But is it safe to use glyphosate?
Simply put, yes--and like all pesticides, they should be used according to instructions on the label. Canada has two regulatory agencies for glyphosate. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which inspects crops to see if there is any residue of pesticides. And the Pest Management Regulating Agency (PMRA) is the one that provides the regulatory guidelines as well as product evaluations and approvals (or refusals) and also has one of the largest evaluation procedures across the globe.
In addition to ensuring that herbicides approved by the FDA are used correctly by farmers, the regulatory agencies make sure that the safe and proper use of glyphosate continues by producers, farmers as well as animals, so that no unintended danger is caused to the natural environment or animals.
Also, thanks to improvements in technology and use of precision agriculture, farmers are able to make use of information to become more precise with their application of glyphosate both where it's applied and how much is applied.150
It is rare to find glyphosate is found in food items. CFIA makes sure that farmers make use of herbicides safely and adhere to established residue limits16. It is not common and does not cause harm for human or animal health17.
Sustainable farming practices also include the use of Glyphosate
Farmers use herbicides such glyphosate in integrated pest/weedmanagement practices. This means they use more herbicides than just weedicides. Glyphosate has allowed them to adopt conservation-based tillage or non-till methods which provide long-term benefits to the soil, air and environmental health.
- Reduction or elimination plowing/tilling of the land
- Reduced CO2 emissions
Capturing carbon in soil
- Improving soil health
- Reducing water ranoff and limiting erosion13
"No pesticide regulatory authority anywhere in the world has deemed the glyphosate chemical to pose a cancer risk to humans at the levels at which people are exposed." - Health Canada (January 11, 2019)
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, How to provide for the planet's needs in 2050
It's now more vital than ever before that Canadian farmers have access to the technology, tools, support and tools needed to supply the food needs of a growing number of people.
Farmers will continue to ensure that our food secure and plentiful by observing good agricultural as well as pest and food safety practices. http://www.nogyoya.com/fs/nogyoya/5608829 Glyphosate is just one of many tools that they will employ to ensure Canadians as well as other people around the globe have access to healthy, affordable food options in the near and future.
