Ces jardins d’Islandbridge, une banlieue de Dublin, sont l’un des jardins commémoratifs les plus célèbres d’Europe. Ils sont dédiés à la mémoire des 49 400 soldats irlandais morts pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Le nom de chaque soldat est contenu dans les manuscrits somptueusement illustrés de Harry Clarke dans les salles de livres en granit.
Ces jardins ne sont pas seulement un lieu de mémoire; ils sont également d’un grand intérêt architectural et d’une grande beauté. Le grand Sir Edwin Lutyens les a conçus. Lutyens était un concepteur de jardins prolifique, en particulier de monuments commémoratifs de guerre, mais n’a néanmoins prêté son expertise qu’à quatre jardins en Irlande.
Les roseraies englouties, les bordures herbacées et la plantation d’arbres font une visite agréable en toute saison. L’atmosphère solennelle et sereine de cet élégant jardin en fait un endroit idéal pour se détendre et réfléchir.
