The FDA has confirmed Avanos Medical’s recall for its Cortrak*2 oral access device. 629 devices, distributed between 2016 and 2022, were recalled by U.S. starting on March 21.
Avanos Medical feeding tube Cortrak*2 aids clinicians to place medical feeding tubes into the stomach or small bowels of patients needing to receive nutrition via tube.
The system's recall was caused by patient deaths and injury following an error in placement of the nasocentric or nasogas. These tubes aid in insertion. A wrongly placed nasogastric or nasal tube could cause severe injuries or even death.
Avanos Medical feeding tube According to AvanosSafety Communication there were 60 deaths and 23 injuries related to this issue. The adverse events that were reported include pneumothorax, respiratory failure perforation, pneumonia and the pleural effusion.
