Six Components of Digital Certificate Management
Certificate programs are becoming the industry standard for digital signature. They provide end users with enhanced security, digital authentication, and improved manageability and operational efficiency. Certificate programs can be implemented at various levels of an organization from a basic certification to a comprehensive certification solution. However, developing and maintaining the program can prove challenging for IT professionals.

IT security teams face many challenges in managing certificates that have been acquired through the process of digital certificate management. For one, there are often multiple domains involved in the program. Secondly, the program typically requires continuous monitoring and updates. In addition, the time taken for the issuance of new certificates is often in line with the program schedule and can be extremely time consuming. With these challenges in mind, it is important for the business case to establish the purpose and goals of the program, develop appropriate metrics to track progress, generate reporting results, and monitor the health of the system.

There are six stages involved in the lifecycle of digital certificates, each of which is vital to the overall security of the enterprise. The first stage is the creation of the digital certificate database. The creation of the database includes creating the subject domain list, selecting the trusted authority and creating a design for the digital certificate infrastructure.

The second stage is the implementation of the digital certificate management application. Application development includes application deployment, configuration of the web service gateway, configuration of the issuer infrastructure, development of trust anchors and other associated DNS policy files, use cases and security considerations, testing, maintenance, and integration with external systems. In addition to application development, there will also need to be configuration of the internal business processes that will use the application as well as training for staff members. Security checks will also need to be performed on the application.

startup is implementation of the process of certification approvals. This includes the identification of suitable vendors and the development of trust anchors. The next stage involves the design of the user interface for the digital certificates lifecycle. This is followed by implementation of the various gait components that will be needed such as the digital certificate workflow, the approval workflow, the workflow for generating the SSL certificate and other associated keys, approving approvals, workflow for issuance, application distribution and deployment, tracking of all approved digital certificates, handling return keys and other related documentation, upgrading user permissions and user access authorization.

The fourth stage involves the design and deployment of the actual infrastructure for managing the digital certificates lifecycle. This includes configuration of the database and content delivery network for storing, processing, approving, and storing the certificates in a safe and efficient manner. It will also require the integration of the enterprise mobility management platform.

The last stage of the process is to build and deploy the workflow applications used for managing the certificates in a reliable manner. It will also include the creation of the critical trust index (CSID). This is an index of certificates that ensures the security of digital certificates. The CSID is an extension of the digital certificate key and the index will guarantee that the digital certificate key has not been compromised or duplicated. The final step involves the generation of the token.

startup of the digital certificate management process described in the gartner et al Certification Guide are designed for businesses that have opted for enterprise certificate management solution but may find difficulty in implementing the solution. They provide the guidance on how to choose the right vendors for the different tasks involved in the process of digital certificate management. They also provide the knowledge on the architecture of the business case. In the process they identify the business case, select the appropriate vendor for the project, set up the design and build the workflow application. They conclude by deploying the application in a supported infrastructure.
