What Your Dog Knows About You

Sad, happy, or suspicious behavior is obvious to dogs. They can even detect cancer. Dogs know more about your emotions and health than you ever imagined.

Based on your actions, I make judgments about you. The University of Milan researchers studied dogs that gave food to a beggar and dogs that told the beggar to leave their property. The dogs rushed toward the generous people as they waved simultaneously to the dogs.

You don't like someone.

When you are upset about someone, I can notice your breath changes, watch your body stiffen slightly, and even smell the pheromones your body emits. It may be that you don't like your in-laws, if you suspect that I dislike them.

Your travels

Humans are like sponges. Every time you walk around or touch something, you are picking up volatile organic compounds. You might also smell the foods you bought at the supermarket, along with the people you were with at the checkout if you just went to the supermarket. A few of us are able to sniff out different types of cancer by smelling chemicals released by cancer cells. In some studies, we had an accuracy of 88% for breast cancer detection, and 99% for lung cancer detection.

You come home

Knowing your schedule, we know roughly when you'll return home each day. Although you may arrive home at an unusual time, I can hear your car. I'm still listening to hear it even when it's on the street.

You fought with your partner.

Regardless of whether you speak to me or not, I will notice your uneven tone, your posture, or the way you open drawers or walk in a restless way. Whenever our owners argue, it can give us stomach aches.

Having protection would be helpful.

When your spouse is out of town, do I sleep near your bed instead of my usual place? When we pass through a dark area, am I closer to your leg than usual? Whenever I'm afraid, my body releases adrenaline, and when someone in the family is away, I am more alert.

Traveling is on the agenda for you.

I hate the idea of you leaving, so I notice all the signs you leave: suitcases taken out of the closet or your way of arranging clothes on your bed. Our bodies tremble and yell when we are experiencing anxiety. According to a study, classical music can relieve stress when listened to alone.

Our bodies release oxytocin (the same hormone we release when we look at our children) when we make eye contact with you. We look to you with love when we need something: it works.

Your intentions

There are almost imperceptible cues in your body language, like the way you peek or pick up the leash, telling me what you're going to do. Following the gaze of a human led dogs to recognize the location of hidden food in one study.

You don't feel well

The nose can pick up anything from a blood sugar drop to a migraine. Dogs that alert epilepsy patients before a seizure occurs are receiving widespread use. In a Hawaiian hospital, dogs picked up infections in paralyzed patients who could not report their symptoms.

Your baby is vulnerable.

I know your little one is a member of the clan, and he is the most vulnerable. My strong instinct to protect my family makes me extremely protective. I yell aggressively when someone approaches the stroller, so your child should be attentive if someone is playing with him around me.

You are disappointed

My ability to read your body language and emotional state makes me a master in this field.
