Dear Students,

This weekend’s mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York provided a grim reminder of the violence and racism experienced by Black individuals not only in the United States, but also here in Canada. Over the same weekend, a mass shooting also took place at a Taiwanese church in Laguna Woods, California, causing distress for communities that have witnessed a rise in anti-Asian violence during the pandemic.

We all have different lived experiences and members of the George Brown College community may be feeling sad, anxious or angry, or experiencing trauma or re-traumatization as a result of recent events. Varied responses are normal, and can affect how people show up at work, or at school. I want to let you know that your George Brown community stands with you at this difficult time, and we are here to support you.

We have provided a list of counselling and wellness resources, along with specific supports for Black identified and Taiwanese community members on our website.

Listening Circles

Black students are invited to a listening circle hosted by George Brown on Thursday May 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please register in advance for this meeting.

The session will be hosted by Desiree Phillips, and will provide an opportunity to hold space, share and process the events within our community.

Safety on campus

I know that hearing about acts of violence can bring a heightened sensitivity, and students and employees may be feeling anxious about their safety. If at any point you are concerned for your safety while on campus, do not hesitate to call 416-415-4000 to reach security.

Ways to support victims of the Buffalo shooting and their families

Fundraisers have been set up to support those impacted by the mass shooting. GoFundMe has identified verified fundraisers. You can learn more here.

George Brown College is committed to creating a safe, equitable and inclusive environment for all students and employees, while addressing systemic barriers that continue to impact the lives of Black, Indigenous and racialized people. By working together to deliver on our Anti-Racism Action Plan, we can all contribute to necessary social change within our college and our broader community.
