Avanos Medical has recalled the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System because of injuries and deaths caused by misplacement of nasoenteric and nasogastric tube. The recall covers 629 devices in use across the United States.
Avanos Medical Avanos Medical feeding tube Avanos has promoted the Cortrak*2 Entraal Access System that assists with the placement of a medical feeding tube. Patients may however suffer from damage to their vocal cords and lungs if the tube is not properly placed. The recall notification from Avanos Medical states that, since 2015 there has been 60 deaths and 23 injuries due to misplacement nasogastric feed tubes when using the CORTRAK*2 access system. The injuries can be described as pneumothorax, respiratory failure, and perforation. These are all types of lung collapse.
Avanos Medical has presented a plan to update users' labels, to confirm the correct positioning of nasogastric (and the nasoenteric) tubes prior to use
Avanos is the FDA's second warning regarding insertal feeding tubes. Avanos Medical feeding tube The FDA advised healthcare professionals and parents of the risk of strangulation among children who feed tubes. Two deaths of children from strangulation occurred in 2021. They were due to a tubing system that wrapped around a patient's neck.
