Avanos Medical (U.S. Avanos Medical feeding tube Food & Drug Administration) has announced that it is recalling Cortrak*2's enteral access system. The recall was initiated due to patient injuries and deaths caused by misplaced nasoenteric/nasoga tubes. The recall includes 629 devices that were sold in the United States.
Cortrak 2 eternal access system Avanos selling its Cortrak*2 Endural Access System has been for its screen-based visualizations of stomachs of patients and small bowels, which aid in the placement of medical feed tubes. If the tube is placed in a way that is not correct it is possible for patients to suffer injury to their vocal cords, lungs, or the trachea. The recall notification from Avanos Medical states that since 2015, there have been 60 patient deaths and 23 injuries due to incorrect placement of nasogastric feed tubes using the CORTRAK*2 enteral access system. The lungs fail, there is pneumothorax (collapsed lungs) perforation (a hole in the esophagus or bowel wall) as well as pneumonia and excess fluid in the lungs (the chest cavity and lungs) have all been among the incidents.

The Avanos warning is the second caution the FDA issued in 2022 regarding enteral feeding tubes. Avanos Medical In February, parents and health professionals were warned by the FDA regarding the risk of strangulation of children using feeding tubes. Two deaths from child strangulation was reported in 2021 as a result of the tube being tied around the neck of a child.
