Apple notebooks
Apple is undergoing a broad branding overhaul about how it refers to its Mac portable range. Apple used to refer to the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro officially as “Mac notebooks” or “notebooks”, referencing the outdated terminology in the industry of notebook computers.
However, now everything user-facing seems to convert slowly to the “laptop” nomenclature. The branding update has been reflected in updated pages on the Apple Online Store, articles in the Apple Support knowledge base and even the Mac operating systems.

The MacBook line launched in 1991
However, there have been many different naming conventions over the years. The Powerbooks of the 1990s were the first to be released. The iBook G3, The biggest news of recent years was the introduction of Apple’s M-series chips in 2020. We look at the evolution and innovations of Apple’s laptops, from the original PowerBook to the new MacBook Pro and Air.
PowerBook100
The PowerBook 100, Apple’s second-ever laptop, was a successor to the Mac Portable. It featured a setback keyboard which allowed for palm rests—a front-and-centre trackball for both left-handed and right-handed users.
Initially criticized for not having a hard drive, it was a great success. The Sony model featured a Motorola 68000 processor and 2MB of RAM. It also had a 9 in. backlit LCD
PowerBook 500
Apple’s PowerBook 500 series was released in 1994. It featured a trackpad that replaced the trackball, an Ethernet port, stereo speakers and a microphone. It included a 9.5-inch display, depending on the model. It comes with a Motorola 68LC040 processor and a black-and-white or colour display.
PowerBook G3
Apple’s most customizable laptop, the PowerBook G3, was launched in 2007. It featured a PowerPC G3 processor that was two times faster than Pentium or Pentium II processors. There were also built-in video output and swappable expansion bays to allow multiple storage options. A flip-up keyboard easily accesses the RAM expansion slot or removable hard disk drive.
iBook
Apple’s first iBook design, now known as the “clamshell”, was influenced greatly by the original iMac. It featured a transparent polycarbonate shell measuring 12.1 inches in length and two translucent colours:

It was powered with a PowerPC G3 CPU and featured a 6-hour battery life. Its integrated power connector lit up amber when the battery was charged and turned green when fully charged. The iBook G3 had a sleep indicator beacon that lit up when the iBook was in sleep mode or switched off.
PowerBook Titanium - G4
Apple’s Titanium PowerBook G4 was unveiled in 2001. It had a PowerPC G4 CPU, a slot-loading DVD drive, and a 5-hour battery. It measured 1 in. thick, 5.3 lbs and included a 15.2-in. The TFT widescreen active-matrix screen outperformed Pentium III-based notebooks by up to 30%. Apple’s use of metal as an exterior casing became standard in all Mac products.
MacBook Pro

MacBook Air
Apple’s groundbreaking MacBook Air was the world’s thinnest notebook at its debut when CEO Steve Jobs introduced it at Macworld 2008. Due to its thinness, Apple’s revolutionary MacBook Air was the first Mac without an optical Superdrive. It also featured a multitouch trackpad and gestures.
It came with a 13-inch. The display was LED and featured a full-size backlit keyboard with an integrated iSight videocam. Apple added an 11.6-in. It was designed to compete against ultrabooks and netbooks.
MacBook Pro With Retina Display
Apple first brought the iPhone’s impressive high-resolution display to its Mac lineup with the MacBook Pro With Retina Display. In 2015, Apple removed the “with Retina” suffix from its MacBook Pro line and added Force Touch-enabled trackpads to the MacBook Pro line.
MacBook Pro 13-in. M1 (2020)
The 13-in. MacBook Pro is the first Apple laptop with the company’s “M1” processor. It is capable of delivering fast speeds while still sustaining all-day battery life. Apple CEO Tim Cook claimed that the M1 is the “most powerful chip we have ever made.” The Pro model, announced in tandem with the M1 MacBook Air, comes with an 8core CPU, an 8core CPU and two thunderbolt ports. It weighs in at just 3 pounds. Although the design has been updated with the new processor, the rest is unchanged. The keyboard, “Magic”, was redesigned. You can get it in Silver and Space Gray.
MacBook Air M1 2020
who unveiled the M1 13-in and the latest MacBook Air together. MacBook Pro comes with Apple’s latest 8-core M1 chipset, which can either have a 7-core or 8-core GPU. Apple claims that the Air is 3.5x faster than its predecessor. It features graphics that are 5x faster and SSD performance that is twice as fast. The Air is quiet thanks to its fanless design, allowing up to 18 hours of uninterrupted video playback. Apple’s “Magic”, a revamped keyboard, is also available on the Air. It is available in Silver and Space Gray as well as Gol.
MacBook Pro 14in and 16in M1 (2021).
The 16-in. MacBook Pro and all-new 14. Turbocharged versions of Apple’s M1 processor are available in the M1 Pro (or M1 Max) models. You can order either model with either processor or the M1 Max chips. However, the price difference between the M1 Max and M1 Pro models is several hundred dollars. Apple claims the M1 Pro is 70% faster and has 3x more memory bandwidth than the M1 chip; the M1 Max increases the GPU’s core count to 32 cores, which provides 4x faster GPU performance than that of the M1. The new design has no Touch Bar, mini-LED XDR screens, three Thunderbolt4 ports, an SDXC slot, and an HDMI port. Six speakers and a 1080p HD cam are included.
MacBook Air Air 2 (2022)
The MacBook Air’s new M2 processor has four new colours and a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display. It weighs around 2.7 pounds and measures 11.3mm thick. The additions include a 4-speaker sound system and a 1080p HD camera. There are also physical function keys and support for fast charging using an optional 67-watt USB-C power adapter.
