British Museum to be digitally recreated in Minecraft By Joe Miller Technology Reporter
23 September 2014
The video game Minecraft will recreate the British Museum in London, complete with all of its exhibits.
This project is part of the Museum of the Future program, which aims at increasing the institution's appeal.
Many real-world organizations have created maps using Minecraft such as Ordnance Survey, the Danish government and Ordnance Survey. They want to inform young people of their work.
This week, Minecraft was sold to Microsoft for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).
A spokesperson for the museum emphasised that the project was still at "an early stage of planning" and that the "build" was not yet started.
She stated that the group was looking to recruit people to help with the "construction".
The British Museum
The first museum that was a public institution in the world, established in 1753.
The UK's most visited tourist destination
More than six million people visit the museum every year and holds eight million objects
Its natural history collection were relocated to South Kensington in 1880s, where it would become the Natural History Museum.
Its instantly easily identifiable Great Court was designed by Lord Foster and is the largest covered public space in Europe.
One British Museum employee posted details of the project on the social media site Reddit soliciting volunteers to join in.
The game received a rousing response from Minecraft fans across the world.

Initial stages
Digitally creating the Great Court, facade and interior of the building is the first step in the process.
The museum hopes that this stage will be available at the time of the public debate on changing public dialogs with museums in the digital age. It will take place on October 16th.
Ovum's Ovum gaming analyst Ed Barton told the BBC that the British Museum's shift towards Minecraft would make it "perceived to be a fun activity" and serve as an educational tool for the younger public.
"It's the digital equivalent of building the British Museum in Lego," he said. It has to be built brick by brick.
He also said that the company deserves praise for crowdsourcing the project "as this transforms it into something collaborative" and can increase the number of youngsters Minecraft fans.
He added, "What an awesome project it would be to be to build the Elgin Marbles out of Minecraft."
People who are interested in contributing to the British Museum's project can register their interest on Reddit.
