Avanos Medical, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) company is recalling Cortrak*2 enteral access device due to misplacement nasoenteric tubes or nasogastric tubs which could have caused injuries and even deaths of patients. The recall includes 629 devices sold in the United States.
Avanos Medical Avanos marketing the Cortrak*2 Endural Access System is known for its on-screen visualizations of stomachs and small bowels to aid in the placement of medical feeding tubes. If a tube is inserted incorrectly, however, patients could experience damage to their vocal cords, lungs, or the trachea. According to the Avanos Medical recall notice, there have been 60 injuries and 23 deaths of patients since 2015 related to misplacement of feeding tubes for nasogastric patients making use of the CORTRAK* 2 Enteral Access System. Cortrak 2 eternal access system There have been numerous injuries, including respiratory failure, pneumothorax, collapsed lung perforation (a hole in the lung's wall or the bowel) pneumonia, and pleural effusion. It is the excess fluid that forms between your lungs and the chest cavity.

Avanos was the second caution that was issued by the FDA in 2022 about the use of enteral nutrition tubes. In February the FDA issued a caution to healthcare professionals as well as parents about the possibility of strangulation in children who use feeding tubes. Two cases were reported of strangulation in children who were fed through a tube tied around their necks.
