Avanos Medical faces a Class I recall over the feeding tube system that was linked to 23 deaths in 2015

Seven years after bad luck for the Avanos Medical enteral feeding tube placement device The FDA has handed down the most serious of designations for recalls of the device.

According to FDA the Georgia-based company reminded users in the March 21 Field Correction Notification to "confirm placements of nasogastric & Nasoenteric tubes as per the policies of the institution". Avanos is also asking them to add the safety notice to the operating manual for the device and to confirm that they have received the update.

Avanos said it would shortly issue new labels to the device. These will include the instructions for how to position a tube, in accordance with their policies.

This is the FDA’s second caution in relation to feeding tubes for enteral nutrition. In February, the FDA issued a safety alert for parents and healthcare professionals about the risk of strangulation to children using feeding tubes.

Following two reports of deaths in 2021, the notice was issued. The tubing system was not being controlled by caregivers or staff placed around the necks and necks of infants under two years of age.

"The FDA believes that strangulation with enteral feed set tubing children is not common, however healthcare professionals and caregivers need be aware that such events can and do occur," the agency stated in the announcement.
