Avanos Medical, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) company, is recalling Cortrak*2 enteral access system due to misplacement nasoenteric tubes or nasogastric tubs that could have led to injuries or even patient deaths. Avanos Medical The recall covers 629 devices that are distributed throughout the United States.
Avanos has marketed its Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System for its interactive display of the stomach or small bowel, which can aid in the proper placement of a medical feeding tube. Incorrectly inserting a tube can cause harm to vocal cords, lungs and the trachea. According to the Avanos Medical recall announcement it has been reported that there were 60 incidents of injury and 23 patient deaths in the last year due to improper placement of feeding tubes for nasogastric patients using the CORTRAK* 2 Enteral Access System. These injuries include respiratory failure and pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and perforation (a hole in the lung's wall, esophagus, or bowel), pneumonia, and an effusion of the pleura (excess fluid that has accumulated between the lungs and chest cavity).
Avanos Medical describes a plan to revise labeling in order to ensure proper placement of Nasogastric or Nasoenteric tubes prior to it is used.
