Alison and Max are evidence that differences don't hinder their friendship. Max is always looking for new adventures even if it means getting in trouble. Alison prefers to stick to the rules. Both are intrigued by the battered old journal Max discovers, as well as the bizarre gate that its mysterious author, the Enchanter, describes as a gate into a realm of danger known as the Nether.
After they follow the journal's instructions to create the portal, Max and Alison squabble over whether to remain secure in the Overworld or to venture into the Nether to search for the Enchanter . . . until a fateful accident makes the decision for them.
Confronted with a terrifying new world, Max and Alison find an all-around friend in Freya, the fierce warrior who has been living in the Nether with her beloved Bunny Biter, a wolf. With Freya's help and the clues in the pages of the mysterious journal, Max and Alison embark on a quest to find the Enchanter and save the world, even as the Nether tests their abilities-and friendship to the limit.
