Minecraft Game Adds Ordnance Survey GB Terrain Data

Minecraft game includes Ordnance Survey GB terrain data By Matthew Wall Technology reporter, BBC News

23 September 2013

Minecraft, the well-loved building and monsters video game has now been able to incorporate precise Ordnance Survey terrain data of Great Britain in its blockwork virtual world.

The game's 33 million players are able to create worlds on top of geographically precise landscapes that cover 224,000 sq km (86,000 sq miles) of Britain.

Joseph Braybrook, an intern with OS's Innovation Labs, created the GB Minecraft world in just two weeks.

It uses OS OpenData products for free.

Graham Dunlop, OS Innovation Lab Manager, stated that "we believe we've constructed the biggest Minecraft world ever" based on real-world data.

"The resulting map shows the enormous potential, not only for using Minecraft for the purposes of geography and computer technology in schools, but the huge scope of applications that can be made with OS OpenData too."

Minecraft was invented in 2009 by Swede Markus "Notch" The game is a virtual world that is made up cubes of different materials like sand, rock, and lavas.

Players can work together to build shelters, make things out of raw materials, and fight various creatures.

The OS GB world contains more than 22 billion Minecraft blocks.

After downloading the map into Minecraft and then logged in, they can enter the 3D virtual world via OS's head office in Southampton and can recreate real-life features such as Stonehenge or even imagined structures such as Hogwarts castle.

OS Terrain 50 and OS VectorMap are OS map products that work together to create a 3D model overlaid with features like water, woodland, and roads.

Players can build their own structures on top of the real-world terrain.

As OS is the UK's national mapping authority, its data encompasses the mainland and the surrounding islands but it does not include Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man or Channel Islands.
