Impossibility of empathy causes narcissistic personality disorder

Researchers have identified a central narcissistic feature - an inability to empathize with others. They distinguish two different types of empathy: affective and cognitive. Empathy involves the ability to understand the feelings of others, but it is the ability to respond to those feelings that distinguishes narcissists from other people. They may even manipulate and deceive people to get their way. However, high-functioning sociopaths may be charming and appealing, so it can be difficult to detect them. Psychopaths are socially manipulative, callous, and narcissistic. These people have no regard for other people's feelings, and their behavior is motivated by self-interest. They also have little regard for interpersonal bonds and do not show any emotion towards others. Psychopaths are characterized by a lack of compassion, while sociopaths are motivated solely by self-interest. Moreover, they often blame others for their own actions.

Full-blown psychopathy

A new study shows that a person with high levels of psychopathy has a different pattern of cortical activation and effective connectivity than people with lower scores. The insula, OFC, and vmPFC are all hyper-activated in those with full-blown psychopathy. This difference in activity is not attributed to a change in empathy for pleasure or pain; rather, it's related to an increase in instrumental aggression.

Psychopathic people's lack of empathy may be a result of diminished responsiveness to other people's distress cues. This may explain why they proceed with aggressive acts despite having a reduced capacity for empathy. Further, people with psychopathy are less likely to demonstrate the pain network. They also have impaired responses to social cues and are prone to displaying aggressive behaviors. As such, it is difficult to differentiate between persons with high empathy levels and those who are not.

Confirmation bias

The American Psychological Association defines confirmation bias as the tendency to seek information that supports preexisting beliefs. We tend to ignore evidence that contradicts our preexisting opinions and interpret ambiguous evidence to reinforce our preexisting attitudes. This type of bias is particularly strong when the information supports our desired outcome, our most deeply held beliefs, or both. Luckily, we can learn to overcome our own confirmation bias and develop a more critical perspective.

The origin of the confirmation bias is based on studies in the 1960s. Psychologists discovered that people are prone to confirm their own beliefs, so they would look for confirming evidence. The studies that followed were later reinterpreted to reflect the biases that resulted from one-sided testing. Current explanations of confirmation bias reveal that humans are limited in their capacity to process information and investigate in a neutral and scientific manner.
