Take a look at new features coming to the Minecraft Caves and Cliffs 1.17 update prior to the official release.

The date for the release of Minecraft's 1.17 Caves and Cliffs update (opens in a new tab) is quickly approaching However, for those who don't want put off the update, Mojang's Snapshots are an excellent way to experience the upcoming features before they are released.

Minecraft Snapshots are publicly-released test builds that are unpolished with features of upcoming updates for players to test. It's a chance for Mojang to test how features work in the game before making them permanent parts of the official update. Players can report bugs and provide feedback to Mojang for improvements.

Snapshots can contain any feature that the studio would like to test and can include new biomes or mobs as well as game mechanics, blocks and even new mobs. Snapshots contain a range of features from Caves and Cliffs like glowing squids (opens new tab) cave generation, caves, and lush flora and fauna that you'll find within blocky caverns. If you don't mind some minor glitches every now and then, Minecraft Snapshots are a great method of trying out upcoming features prior to the update's official release. Here's what you need to know to get a sneak peek of the future of Minecraft.

Minecraft Snapshot installation: How to access beta builds

Snapshots are available on the Java edition of Minecraft however there is an option to view some of the early features in the Bedrock edition as well. These are the Bedrock betas for Android, Xbox One and Windows 10, which are not identical to Snapshots but they do include a number of new features.

Mojang has made jumping into the early versions of Minecraft fairly simple So here's how to do it:

Snapshots on Minecraft: Java Edition:

- Open the Minecraft launcher. - Click the 'Installations' tab

- Check the box that says Snapshots in the upper right corner.

The most recent Snapshot will be at the end of the list of installed programs.

Beta version of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition:

- Go to the Microsoft Store app on Windows 10

Look for the Xbox Insider App and download it

Start the app and then select the Insider Content tab. It is located on the left

- Select Minecraft and hit the join button

The app can take you to Minecraft's product page if you don't have a digital copy the game.

If you're after Xbox One or Android instructions for Minecraft, visit Mojang's beta page (opens in new tab) for further instructions. To keep up with new Snapshots and betas, save the Minecraft forum's news page (opens in new tab) which provides a breakdown of all the released versions.

Snapshots and betas can be extremely unstable and your world might crash or become janky. So , make sure that you start in a place you don't mind getting a bit corrupted. In other words, you should keep your top Minecraft builds (opens in new tab) safe in a different universe.
