While in Moldova, WJC CEO Robert Singer insists on the importance of Holocaust preservation and the adoption of a universal definition of antisemitism

CHISINAU, MOLDOVA - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met this week in the Republic of Moldova with senior government ministers and the leaders of the local Jewish community for discussions focused on the preservation of Holocaust memory and education, the security of the Jewish community, and the need to combat antisemitism at all levels. "The World Jewish Congress thanks the Moldovan government for its warm reception and for its proclaimed dedication to the preservation of the memories of the Holocaust," said Singer. On Thursday, Singer discussed with Tudor Ulianovschi the negative consequences of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definitions for antisemitism. Singer was also adamant about the need to publicly condemn anti-Semitism. Minister Ulianovschi emphasized on his part the determination of the Moldovan authorities to establishing society that is built on the principles of tolerance, non-discrimination , and respect for the rights of all citizens of every ethnic group. Singer was also praised by Ulianovschi by the WJC for their cooperative efforts with Moldova.

The foreign minister noted that in 2016 the Chisinau parliament accepted the final report from the International Commission on Holocaust Studies that was chaired and supervising by Elie Wiesel. In January 2017, the government approved the Action Plan for its implementation.

Singer and WJC attended a meeting on Wednesday with Moldova's Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. They discussed opportunities for restitution as well as economics of Jewish property in Moldova. Concerning the preservation of Jewish cemeteries, the minister expressed intent to support the process, beginning with a pilot program of 10 cemeteries across the country.

Singer and WJC representatives met with Monica Babuc the Moldovan Education Minister to discuss training of teachers on Holocaust education. The discussion also included the possibility of creating the creation of a Museum of Jewish History for the Republic of Moldova, the preservation and protection of monuments to Holocaust victims as well as the importance of keeping Jewish cemeteries in a respectful and proper manner. Singer thanked Minister Babuc to her support in the areas of education, Holocaust commemoration and in ensuring a continued and fruitful collaboration between the Jewish community and the Ministry.

Singer, Mirilashvili & Bilinkis have also met with Vlad Plahotniuc of the Democratic Party of Moldova to discuss relations with the Jewish community of Moldova as well as bilateral ties between Israel and Moldova.

During his visit, Singer also met with the rabbis from the Jewish communities of Moldova, discussing key questions relating to religious practice and services in Moldova, and focusing on ways to enhance Jewish daily life in all its aspects.

Moldova is home to about 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community, which was once devastated by the Shoah as well as a civil war that is now flourishing and spreading across the nation. The Jews of Moldova are experiencing a surge in self-confidence and a return to their roots. They're proud of their Jewish heritage and their culture, which is celebrated through literature, music and theatre.
